Okay, I think many non-classic maps is good, but iit can be taken way to far. My biggest pet-peive is the crossword map. The battle dynamics are okay, but it destroys the piont of the game. Risk is about conquering countries, not moving numbers acroos a peice of paper.

I'd say that if you only want to play on the classic map, then do so... what does it matter if there are 2 extra maps or 20?

I've been around World at War long enough to see that with all the maps the site offers, the classic map is still the one that's played most.

The classic map will not be beated, although other maps are good too. In fact, I dont like classic map thaaaaat much, but I admit, its a bit, ehh, how can I say... classic!! Maps that I like more than classic: Brazil, Europe and Middle East. I didnt finish any games at British Isles yet, but it looks really a good map too.

Ok. Can you then explain why my map has 45 countries?

EDIT:
And, if a huge number of players think the classic map is the best, isnt study the classic map when designing another one a good idea to you?

The idea of different maps means DIFFERENT meanding can have twice as many countries. half as many countries and stuff like that.

I think Marv's stance on this issue is frequently misunderstood. It's not so much that he thinks every map should mirror the Classic map exactly; just that they should all be as balanced.

I agree with you Max, I would still love to see a map with much less or much more than 42 countries. But you must concede that it's not the number of countries which makes a map great, it's playability. If it's not balanced, it won't play, and you'll just have a map that is different for the sake of being different.

Given that every single map has gotten at least one vote in the Best Map? poll, it seems clear that not everyone agrees with you.

I've now played Europe, Africa and Asia.

These maps cant hold a candle to the classic map.

Thats it now for me - I've tried some of the others and left left me cold.

It's CLASSIC.. for ever, for me, from now on........

No idea what it is about the classic map that keeps me coming back.

One thing I do know is that the fonts on the Europe map are too large and complex and the shadow effect is uneccessary. All I want to see are clearly defined country borders, as these are the part of the game that are important to playing Risk.

its little things like that that get my goat.
