Not sure if this is a worthy suggestion or not but, some time ago I made a freehand version of a map of Mexico in an attempt inspire someone to design it. The biggest criticism I got was the lack of territories as I only had 31 territories. This map only has 28.

Does anyone think that there should be more territories?

I think that the fonts can be a little bit bigger or thicker as well.

I hope this one comes along :)

I personally have no interest in a San Diego map, it's nothing agaisnt the map, it's just the location doesn't appeal to me. I'm from Australia and Cairns Coral Coast doesn't appeal to me either. I have a tendancy to not like maps of such specific areas. I guess my concern is if one person makes a map of the city/state they live in then everyone will want to. Bigger cities that are well known or have some historical significane are more appealing to me. That's just my opinion though, so good luck Troy, I'll be back with more helpful comments in future. :)

Fair enough. I see this as part of the process of map development. It's part artwork and part functionality. There are plenty of maps I wonder myself why they were created. And to be a little blunt, as a creator I sort of have to just keep trudging ahead even if some people hate it. That's how new ideas get out there, right?

Here's a question for everyone: do you think having more maps is bad or good for CC? Are many maps a draw to this website or does having many maps push people away? As an entrepreneur, I have seen that giving people options when it's pretty much cost free is a very good thing. So, just saying you personally dont like something, are you considering just your opinion or the community. Would you have it that a select few people choose all the maps?

I would think the ideal way to judge maps is put them out there, after the development process of course, and see which are being played the most. Let the market decide. CC is trying to make money, last I checked.

no point putting in maps with little appeal either, me saying i didnt see the iterest did not mean i dont want it on the site just saying that it needs soething, a wow factor before it has interst. Its not just about the area, although that doesnt help, there is nothing special, i can comment and say things that could be improved but it would be pointless because as it is there is no attraction it is all just below average.

If somebody had a wonderfull idea that is implemented then it might grow on me but as it is there is no appeal. Just my opinion

The latest map so far.

Thanks Coleman, johloh, pancakemix, mibi, Guiscard,
Valerian, Keyogi, and luckiekevin for taking the time
to look at it and give input. Please continue.

I'm still playing around with the bonuses ideas. Thinking about adding
more attractions and have attractions worth +1 each.

I can add areas in most places except Ocean Beach. I'll try adding next version.

-i think you should straighten that line of bonuses...the vertical 2,2,5,3,3,4...
-maybe give the ocean some bit of texture...make it look a little more 'ocean like'

I think the map might look better if the pacific ocean text was removed. It's size and placement gives it as much if not more importance than the map title and I personally think the map is a little "wordy" right now. Just my opinion and I could be wrong.

And since I know it's going to be mentioned down the line sometime I figure I might mention it now that the lines need to be softened a bit as the map is a bit pixely. I think doing that step now might help give a better perspective and see what more could be done.

I think you could do a cool San Diego map, and I think you could do a cool Real Estate map, but I'm not feeling the synergy of the two together here yet.

A San Diego map would focus more on prominent features: Zoo, Sea World, TJ, Lego Land, surfers, military (Top Gun), immigrants, retired people, 91x, outdoor malls (UTC, Horton Plaza, Fashion Valey), etc.

A Real Estate map would focus more on: good schools, fault lines, crime rates, beach proximity, new construction, residential/commercial property, etc.

Thematically this isn't excelling at either for me right now... maybe nudge it more in one direction or the other?

-Added territories. Now there are 36.
-Made fonts bigger.
-UPDATED bonus using the formula
( ( ( Territories * 1.5 ) + ( Border Territories * 4 ) + ( Neighbor Territories / 2 ) + Neighbor Regions ) / 6) ) - 1

-straightened out the bonus numbers.
-the texture to the ocean is the melded image. I made it show a bit more now.

-made Pacific Ocean text less dominant.
-softened border lines

Sorry, you're not feelin it. Trying to give this map a little difference from everything else, so this map has the real estate theme to make the units money instead of army units. Also trying to make it generic enough to interest the broadest audience. So I dont think most people care about school districts, crime rates, residential property, etc. There are attractions that bring in the tourist and I've tried to include the big ones.
Could change the name from "San Diego Real Estate" to "San Diego", but then it'll be just another map, so I'm reluctant to do that.

this map is looking good.

but the $'s in the country bonus look like 8's.

and if they are 8's I think the bonus are way too high.

yeah,. thanks for taking my suggestion.. way better

I still feel like this map is lacking uniformity overall. I think that the variety of colors between the legend, title, different borders, and the icons for the various sights are clashing. I think changing the yellow to a more neutral color could be a good start.

I also think the font can be improved. Feels a bit thin.

Question: What's everyone's favorite fonts for putting on maps?

Make the dollar sign smaller than the number and it must be on the left.

I also don't like your title font- I would lose the drop-shadow or whatever you have on there.

This might be a good map to get more ideas from:
http://www.carolmendelmaps.com/mapsd/clicksd/sd2e.html

Since San Diego is such a cool tourist city- I think you should move away from real estate and make it more like a tourist map- and the players would be like rich hotel moguls trying to take over parts of the city. You could still incorporate the dollar signs on that kind of map.

I also think the attractions are too generic. Maybe instead of "Golf" have a specific golf course. It would make it more San Diego.

-changed $ fonts
-put $ in front of numbers
-added sample units
-added effects on lake waters
-trimmed map a little more (started out as my L, now it's my S)
-changed title font

This sounds cool, what's your idea for a name?

Someone else said the generic way looks better. I agree now, it feels less commercialized and keeps the focus on the city. But I do have Sea World in there.

I love the new icons, much more uniform and fitting...

If you were to give them more specific names (such as ____ golf course or whatever) that wouldn't be a problem, but they really look better as uniform style like they are now. Previously they looked a little bit like clipart stuck on a map. Tourist maps still have the names of attractions on them, but they tend to use uniform images of the style currently in your map.
