Well done guys!!
You're never going to please all the people, all of the time....
But you've clearly shown that you listen to your members and that you are very focused on making this site enjoyable and varied for the people who come here to play.
Top notch!

Or is there something that I have missed.
i got mine when i logged in when first updated at top of page said something like you have been awarded blah blah blah drab blah.
but only happened when first updated i see today i have more but no notification.
If you win a game and receive a star, it also pops up in the game log?
Yes. If you are awarded one for joining or winning a game, it will say so in the game log.

Re: Updates 01/11/14: Inventory, Scheduled Autos, Transforma
when you join an autotournament that requires conquer stars, are they removed immediately or when the tournament starts?

Great to see all the new improvements added. Hopefully now there will be an emphasis on making the most of the site, rather than just adding new things.

The instructions state they are removed immediately upon joining and are non-refundable.

It's probably true, but on the other hand, this option does put tournaments a lot more in the spotlights. Community run tournaments may be less popular, but I think lots of them were too simple anyway. Those simple tournaments are now replaced by the auto tournaments, which, in my opinion isn't a bad thing. They will run a lot smoother now! It's also a lot easier to keep track of the tournaments you are in now and I bet there will be a lot of improvements and extra features comming up. I think the first steps to something bigger have been made.
Then again more advanced and interactive community-run tournaments like your History of nuclear war series will be the ones who still deserve to get full. Community tournaments should now be creative to get filled and maybe that's not a bad thing. It may be harder to fill those too, but for that I hope upcomming changes towards tournaments will take this in mind.
Tournaments have been going downhill in terms of the numbers of tournaments and the amount of gaming activity within them for some time. The advent of Auto Tournaments has significantly increased the amount of total Tournament activity, while not significantly reducing the amount of community Tournament activity.
Below are some numbers of games started for you:
Month Auto Regular Total
2013-08 0 9,892 9,892
2013-09 0 8,752 8,752
2013-10 0 7,670 7,670
2013-11 1,657 9,983 10,150
2013-12 3,820 7,723 11,543
2014-01 4,081 9,758 13,839 [Projected based on data to 01/12]
To add to this, coming up we have the most prestigious, if not the largest, series of Community run Tournaments ever - The Championships. The first games for this should be starting soon in the 1v1 tourney... then the remainder will open throughout the year.
The message is: community run tournaments are not going anywhere. There is much you can do with automation, but then there is much you cannot do without extraordinary effort. Tourney organizers should be challenged to come up with new, interesting, creative twists... something which there will always be a call for!

Those stats do not surprise me given the huge publicity and incentives that Auto-Tournaments have had. If Community run Tournaments would have the same means, I'm sure there would be even more people competing on those.

I assume there are some community run tournaments which are quite simple, redundant sometimes and which you can call "it's just one more tournament", but... I think you and the rest of the team should provide more means to those, like me, who really try to add some creativity/different themes to tournaments.
Take a look at my newest suggestion:

One quick question regarding Automatic Game Snapshots. What do you guys mean by Panel Interface? I have BOB and Map Rank installed. I'm guessing I need to install something else to get the auto snapshot feature up and running?
automatic game snapshots is part of the new panel interface that came last update.
you turn it on in "game settings" in Personal menu on left
Perfect. Thanks

So you're saying that I shouldn't award myself a GC medal for its implementation?

Haha, I guess so. I don't think anyone really qualified for a medal there anyway since BG wasn't all that active (IIRC) and the rest of us were mods at the time.
I just didn't want you hogging all the credit just because you made a shiny new post :p
Re: Updates 01/11/14: Inventory, Scheduled Autos, Transforma
I have played my fair share of community tournaments..and now I play a bunch of auto tournaments, and a few community tournaments.
I still look through the community tournaments to see if theres something i like, but as a whole, I really really like auto tournaments. I have been wishing for years that tournaments would pop up where you play more than just 1 game. A few have best of 3 format. Very very few have more. And I understand why. Its wayy too much work. Im currently playing a community tournament with 219 games. One game on each map of CC. I like it
What I really like about auto tournaments is that they start relatively fast. Everything is transparent. You get to play sometimes 7-11 games against the same opponents on lots of more or less random maps and random settings. Updates are immidiate. The tournament is never "abandoned" or dragged out for months. And theres no mistakes in scoring.
I couldn't care less about shiny stars and points. I would not join more community tournaments if they had those. Instead I will join if they have an interesting format.
So yes community tournaments are struggling, but hey, its only because we have gotten something that is really good and really popular. Thats a good thing. We just have to find a way to get the "best of both worlds". I understand some TDs was reluctant to participate, when auto tournaments were developed. That was a big mistake. Embrace the future instead of hiding under a stone. What we need is the most creative TDs to come forward and offer to work with BigWham, and try to create even better autotournaments, and in the process, maybe there can be found a way where the best TDs can get access to the tools and make some really big and creative tournaments that use the automation.
This is just the beginning

This.
What is really important is the auto-snap in the second the game is created.
A snap every turn is not nice because its part of a player discipline. That kind of discipline is 75% of the time the difference between a good and a bad player.

Speed scheduled tournmaments are just great, one of the best updates so far. Is such a great boost of incentive for "casual" speed players

I 100% agree with you. If it's possible to make snaps and even auto snaps, they should be automatically taken when the game starts for both teams. After that, they should always be manually taken by the players themselves.
IRT BigWham:
Thanks for the stats. Really cool! They confirm exactly my point.
Auto-tournaments are awesome. Community tournaments should be creative or special tournaments. Those two should complement each other.
I hope to see these two growing closer together. (example: Checking their stats in the tournament tab, where you now see the stats of active auto tournaments.)
Awesome work admins!

Currently you may use items for:
Joining Tournaments - certain tournaments will list Items as an Entry Cost
Staring At - If you stare for long enough at an Item, something changes inside you
Seriously, great updates bigwham and thanks for the violet star!

With me
I think the reason Team game Auto-tournaments aren't out yet, is more to do with them being a bit different to code. It's not like the teammates can join the tournament at the same time (although perhaps it could be possible with Random Teammates).
Either way, it'll take some time to organise, but I'm sure we'll eventually see them somewhere down the road.
