from 19750 to 19809 today.. looks like its on its way back up as it does at this time every year
19810 now and still increasing..
up to 19813 should be back to 20000 by new year

i'll also be posting about 1000 multis today.. so look for whitestazn89, 90, 91 etc. to start posting about how he's confused as to where classic went, and how "back in the day" the forum was more lively and less full of gloating
Re: 19750 members and dropping
I don't spend a lot of time in the forums, and I'm not up to date on the gossip and politicking that goes on at this site, so please forgive my ignorance when I ask what "Free Dancing Mustard" and "Guess My Phone Number Mean"...
Can anyone help me out?
Oh, and for the record, I think the membership drop is due to the loss of a reasonable Classic map. That new thing is an abomination to look at and a pain in the ass to play.

Well, Dancing Mustard broke the rules and got a forum ban, which is now over. It registered as a small pixel of static on the Worlds Most Insignificant Events Radar.
Guess My Phone Number - I didn't know what this one was. Apparently some Estonian guy put someone's phone number up on the forums, which is a breach of the rules (personal info), so he got booted. Again, a non-event, and testament to the pointlessness of the poll.

I think it has had an effect, but the other maps make up for it, and I've held for a long time that the sooner CC cuts the apron strings of Classic the better.

Um what? The phonenumber was directly related to the DM ban. DM posted a phone number with the guys consent, but was banned anyway. It did happen awhile ago though so i'm not as annoyed as I was earlier. Also, the poll wasn't supposed to be taken seriously. I was mostly wondering what other opinions were.

first paragraph, incorrect... second paragraph, incorrect... both are related and dm is still banned... however, i do agree that it was barely a blip on the internets...-0

congrats Timmy, you've inspired my first post in a new general dscussion thread in months.
From what I can tell, the loss in membership has got to be from the loss of classic. Think about it, what 50+? page thread had probably a hundered threats to not renew membership? I think the people have spoken, and the question has already been answered. But good thread anyway.

I voted for the Mods making up rules as they go along, even though I've never had a problem with anyone.
But this is what I heard from the majority of people who left the site.

less than 2% of all CC users are involved in the forums, i highly doubt trouble with mods would cause a 20% drop, no matter how hard wicked tries...-0

I could never understand the fuss about Classic either. At best, it was fun to play for the nostalgia factor, at worst: it was one of CC's most unremarkable maps.
World 2.1 is far, far better and putting it up on the front page would be a genius idea.

It has to be the classic map and experienced players intimidating new players...
number one because classic is the map that most players play on, and the new players that add to the site's growth are being scared away.
there should be a system to prevent abuse of new players

Re: 19750 members and dropping
I tried to play a classic game with the new board and I found it far less than thrilling. 99% of the games I played were classic, (the other 1% was because I didn't understand what I was doing my first game) If they came up with some sort of geography with the exact same configuration I'd probably be back at it. I came to see if anything had improved and maybe try something different. I'm going to try Great Lakes but I'm not really too keen about it. The variety might be an attraction for others, but I'm just a simple one tracked guy.

I bet there are many things that can be done to improve the score system. Is not that the current one is bad, but it's pretty clear it has its flaws, and is also pretty clear that most of them could be fixed. But I don't see it happening soon.
Personally, I just see score as a way to measure personal improvement. If I see a high ranked player with a majority of casual sequential non 1v1 games, then I take him as a very skilled player. If he has played mostly speed/freestyle games and/or 1v1, then score means nothing.
By the way, the total number of players are increasing for the first time in several months. It is now 19,887. Will we come back to 20,000 players?

Re: 19750 members and dropping
Freestyle has forever changed the face of CC. Just look at the top of the leaderboard, its full of people who play freestyle. If you have a poor connection or dont have clicky then you haev no chance becuase people wait until the last 20 secs before they go.
Farmers, have always been there, i think my first dubz match was against blitz!! Never thought of it as farming noobs back then, but thats exactly what it was!
Bring back some incenetive for us sequential players. Mayve have a freestyle and sequential scoreboard. Also maybe a doubles scoreboard.

Too many maps and game options - This is what attracted me to the site, any many others so, opposite effect
It is good to know that your personal experience is obviously enough to counter the point.
Classic map is one of the main draws of this site. Most people do not play many maps and game options till after they've played a few normal ones. The maps are unorganized which leads to newbies joining interresting but complicated maps where they get farmed.
Mods make up rules as they go along - The rules are stipulated clearly, there are special cases that get dealt with on a one-by-one basis. It's called real life, get over it. Also, zero effect
The mods do make up rules as they go along. Whether it has any effect is debatable, but your easy dismissal of it speaks volumes about you.
High ranks intimidate newcomers - Probably has some effect, hard to measure. I'd say farming is more of a deterrant to newcomers than the simple idea of high ranks. Every game has high ranks, it's whether or not the high ranks are Canute's that's the issue
They intimidate by beating noobs quickly. Unless you say that triples with 3 high ranks against a bunch of newbs is farming too, the effect high ranks have is pretty big. Every game has high ranks, but usually those high ranks do not mingle in the affairs of the low ranks.
The change of classic map and the high ranks are the main reasons for this drop.
