A girl with the wisdom of a thousand years and the blessing of God fell victim to the game of the horse. She had been corrupted by dark forces and had turned her powers to evil, but became helpless and trapped after her leader's death. She fought valiantly to the end, but fate would not side with her.

DoomYoshi (Joan of Arc, Cult Rolegifter) has been killed!

There would be no more deaths at the ands of the horse, however. Its master, a youthful foreigner, was chosen to hang. He lived for many days and brought many good and bad to their graves, but now he would join them.

Sheepofdumb (Rolf, Town Hot Potato) (or Horse Fucker, as it's become known) has been lynched!

Image

That night, with only six remaining, three of the townsfolk painted their faces and slaughtered the rest of their townspeople. They raised their flag, a white cross on blue, over the parcel that was now their land. They fought like warrior poets; they fought like Scotsmen, and won their freedom.

HotShot53 (Sherlock Holmes, Town Cop) has been endgamed!

Image

kgb007 (Flo, Town Doctor) has been endgamed!

Image

jonty125 (Ronnie O’Sullivan, Town Watcher) has been endgamed!

Image

edocsil (William Wallace, Cult Recruiter) has won!

Image

spiesr (Ed the Undying, Cult 3-shot Unkillable) [reduced to 1-shot] has won!

Image

Strike Wolf (Lelouch Lamperouge, Cult Redirector) has won!

Image

Thanks to everyone for playing! I'll have roles and such up this evening for your viewing pleasure.

I was town when I cast that vote and so was one of Strike or Rodion.

Then 4/10 were anti-town, either way it was quite a big number on me for what was being tossed around D2 about anti-town/mafia not risking being on a high heated wagon.

Rodion and Spiesr would have been town back then. I was the cult recruit N1 and yes I would have lynched you if I was still town.

Jak - 10 (jmac, Rodion, aage, SW, Jonty, MP, spiesr, betiko, Neb, edoc)

Out of the 4. Only me and Edoc were on the same team.

And I totally was. I can't believe I got away with that. I thought they were going to hang you for sure for being the cult leader, and unless you had handled your claim as well as you did we would have had a very dicey time of things.

I wonder why sheep didn't claim horse fucker. He stood a way better chance of surviving with that, rather than some weak BP claim.

on the other hand there were many townies voting you as well. Not voting and generally staying quiet are taken as pretty scummy too.

Holy crap...your kill would have been much better later in the game.

Well run game pancake. I think you balanced it very well. Two cults...ouch for town. Interested in the hot potato rules...was sheep picking the players?

Looking forward to #4!

GG all, i didn't feel great lynching sheep at the end but the horse game really forced my hand into hammering, had a bad vibe on edoc since the lost days but my fault for not developing any type of case beyond the initial list

I was half expecting them to lynch me as well when Jonty came back and said I had visited a cult recruit on night 1 and the extra day didn't help. That's why I publicly announced my thoughts on Sheep being Doom's cult partner on LD3. If we had two days in a row like two nights, I wanted to get that piece of information out there first. Honestly, I am not sure I should thank lack of knowledge of Code Geass or not but I was thinking that someone would mention how my character raised his own army and could use his powers to command people. Though still I really wanted to say, "let me be lynched and stay low". Thanks for the praise and to toot my own horn a bit, this is the first game in a while I've really felt fully satisfied with how I played. My biggest regret was actually not convincing you to recruit Hotshot on that last night (I had a feeling mafia might target the confirmed town tails but it wasn't strong enough to follow through on anything).

As far as Sheep. I certainly would have believed he was the horse but I don't know if I would have believed he was town and that was key.

Don't think that the reason you got voted off was because of some anti town wagon. You got voted off cause you played badly. I am pissed at your play, you OMGUS vig killed me night one, on what planet do you live that you see that as good play? You had to die, your play was too random, too extreme and too bad for town to have you round and screamed scum play.

I know you will come up with excuses and reasons for your play, but the good mafia players acknowledge their mistakes and learn from them. You need to see that your play was bad, you need to understand that you fucked up and you need to learn from this mistake. Otherwise you will continue to be a bad mafia player.

Again, thanks PCM, this was a fun game to watch from the sidelines. Cults really mess with your reads and I struggled to see the wood from the trees by the end of it.

Given that Edoc was a countercult, this game was lost the moment I started, I suspect. Either way, can the guy who killed me please stand up?

I won't be playing other games until after the summer, by the way. And next time I'm not sending in actual people any more, like the previous CYOC. "Time"? You brilliant bastard.

fp
@ the Jak thing. I was fueling that fire whilst trying to play town. I also actually mentioned to Doom during N2 that I didn't expect the lynch to be carried through anyway, because it was too obvious and close to the deadline.

I don't know. You were a counter cult to us so I think we had an equal chance. Actually Edoc did try to recruit Doom on LN1. I was going to try to see if I could dig up a case on him about the same time that Hotshot came forward with the investigation result.

Lol...Time, Wind and Death were my three options I sent in. Wanted to give pancake some latitude on how he interpreted those three. I think he did a great job with my role. Sucks that I died (I was a bit too obvious, I think), but at least the game moved along rather quickly in the makeup times.
You are Lelouch Lamperouge, Town Redirector

Image

"If the king does not lead, how can he expect his subordinates to follow?"

Through the use of your Geass, you can dictate to others how they should use their actions. Each night, you may select a player. That player’s action will then be redirected to the target of your choosing.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: Was culted N1, limit 2x use following recruit

Thought: I dunno why, but I always seem to end up with this role in my games. Interestingly, I’ve never seen anyone else make use of it. Part of why I do CYOC is to get creative and see if roles will stick, but I’m the only one who seems to make use. I think this one has potential.

I’m waxing philosophical rather than talking about it’s impact because Strike got culted early on and after that didn’t really use it. Maybe that’s why it hasn’t stuck: I can’t recall a time when the role has changed the game significantly.

You are Dracula, Cult Recruiter

Image

“Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!”

Each night, you may turn one player into a vampire and recruit them into your faction.

You win when the vampires can overpower all other factions.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: If Town, Aage would have been Sir Lancelot (Doc)

Thoughts: Never let anyone tell you I can’t see the humor in frustrating games. This role came about because of The Village of Secrets game that was going on at the same time. I was in the thick of a debate with Jak regarding the existence of a vampire cult in that game. Aage picked Dracula as one of his characters, so opportunity presented itself. It’s too bad he didn’t last longer: with DY on his side he would have been powerful, even with the two-use limitations

You are Patrick Star, Mafia Procrastinator

Image

“Is mayonnaise an instrument?”

You are a lazy starfish who never gets anything done. Sometimes you rope other people into being lazy with you. Each night, you may select one player. Any action that player took will not occur until the following night.

The mafia consists of Anarkistsdream (Canonizer), Whatsausage (Roleblocker), Lootifer (Procrastinator), and TheForgivenOne (Watcher) You will decide amongst yourselves who will carry out the mafia hit each night. That player will PM me the kill selection as well as their other action.

You win when the mafia can overpower all other factions.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: Canonized Lost Night 1

Thoughts: A role I originated in CYOC II, this time playing for the mafia side. It occurred to me after the fact that the mafia effectively had two blockers, which may have underpowered them somewhat.

I didn't announce Lootifer's Canonization (see Nark's PM for a definition), and it didn't end up mattering much either, since MP died the next day and it skipped straight to D4. Loot wouldn't have been allowed to carry out mafia kills while canonized regardless.

You are Miles Edgeworth, Town Hammer

Image

“I object! That was… objectionable!”

As a hardened prosecutor, you always get your man. Even if that means fudging things a bit… If a player is one vote away from being lynched, you may force the lynch to occur without a final vote.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: Culted, 2x use following

Thoughts: This would have been really good for the Wallace cult endgame. Rodion died just a little too soon for that to work out, though. I also realized the “clock” role effectively nullified this role’s usefulness, at least early on. Again though, it’s really an endgame role and it didn’t last that long.

You are Pope Francis I, Mafia Canonizer

Image

“Please pray for me”

One time during the game, you may choose a player who is dead. That player may use their action as normal, but may not post in the game thread (they may, however, communicate through night messages if they are able). You may do this at any time, but can only do this once.

Notes: Canonized Lootifer

Thoughts: This would probably work better as a town role, or perhaps a mafia with more juice. Nark had the benefit of knowing he was dying thanks to a well-timed watch, so he got the canonization off as he died. Even so, I think the role could see better use if it were in a better situation factionwise.

You are Aang, Town Jack of All Trades

Image

“It's like the monks used to tell me, ‘Sometimes the shadows of the past can be felt by the present.’"

You have the power to manipulate the four elements of Water, Fire, Earth, and Air. This allows you to perform a multitude of actions. Each night, you may either kill (fire), busdrive (air), block (earth), or protect (water). Each of these actions is single-use.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Thoughts: Not much to speak of here. Investigation probably would have been a good call here, but it didn't fit the flavor. Probably would have made a difference in game direction, but so it goes.

You are The Wishmaster, 3rd-party Rolegifter Killswitch

Image

“I claim that which is owed”

Each night, you may gift a player an action that will be available to them the next night (and only that night). If that action is used and not blocked, it will give you a point (you will be notified of this). You may not gift a person twice. Once three of your gifts have been used, a portal will open and free your fellow djinn, destroying all other life.

You win when three of your gift actions have been used.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: Changed to not kill everyone on victory. If IB were town, he would have been The Toxic Avenger (vigilante).

Thoughts: Oh, what fun this was. This, on the surface actually seems like a really easy win. I gave IB some limitations because of that, like stipulations on what exactly he could send out. I also made it have to be accepted not only to fit the flavor, but also to avoid things like the Killswitch lovers in CYOC I.

That said, I felt like I neutered this role a bit by not killing everyone when IB won. It lost the punch of the flavor, but I also felt like IB had a supreme advantage just based on his role. It was survival plus to a certain extent in practice. Maybe with more restrictions and more required uses it would have been a better role functionally.

IB gets my personal vote for MVP for playing from the goddamn hospital. That’s dedication.

You are Joan of Arc, Town Rolegifter

“Act, and God will act.”

God has blessed you with the power to bestow his blessings on others. Each night, you may send out a standard action as a gift to another player. These actions only last one night, and the recipient must choose if they are activated.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: Culted, 2x use following, unlimited use after leader’s death. If mafia, Doom would have been a Purifier (basically a reverse framer)

Thoughts: Another role where I my sense of humor came into play, this one a little more self-referential than the others. I was the demon Mephistopheles in edoc’s Angel and Demons game with the fake claim Joan of Arc. The notion of actually making a rolegifter out of Joan amused me.

SW asked me if he would return to being town after edoc died. I had never considered that. Is that standard now? It might have helped doom, because he was kind of up a creek. He made do, though.

You are Frank Underwood, 3rd Party Vote Gatherer

Image

“Democracy is so overrated”

Each night, you have the ability to steal a player’s vote. You have the option of offering that vote to another player to use as a secret vote (sent via PM) for the day. If you do so and the vote is used, the player that accepted your offer loses their vote to you permanently, and you may use it as a secret vote.

You win when you control half of the remaining votes.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

(You may use your action upon receiving this message)

Thoughts: It may actually have been a good thing that virus died early on, because I may have put him into an impossible situation. My prediction was that people would catch on to not getting their votes back after the first one and no one would take virus’ bait after the first person to do it lost their vote. I could have rectified it by just letting him steal votes outright, but the horse god saw fit to do otherwise.

You are Australia, Town Poisoner

Image

“Do you come from a land down under/Where women glow and men plunder?” – Men at Work

The Outback is filled with venomous creatures. Each night, you may select a player. That player will die during the following night phase.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Thoughts: One of the reasons I do CYOC is to bend convention. Granted, I do that in non-CYOC games, but CYOC just gives me an excuse. One of the ways is in role alignments: poisoner isn’t a typical town role. It would have been interesting if Jmac had had the opportunity to claim. Also affecting that would be that fact that he was claiming Australia. And why not? The more inanimate objects in the game, the better, I say.

You are Ronnie O’Sullivan, Town Watcher

Image

“Looking for perfection is the only way to motivate yourself”

Your keen eyes allow you to see many things exactly as they are. Each night, you may watch one player. You will see all actions that target that player

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: If Mafia, Jonty would have been a Sniper.

Thoughts: I had never seen a game of snooker before researching this character, though I have played pool (I am bad at it), which is in the same family of games. I was able to appreciate the video I found of O’Sullivan making a maximum break (scoring all the balls on the opening of the match) to win a championship. Look it up. It’s impressive.

I feel bad that jonty got dragged back in at the end just to lose, but that's the wacky nature of the beast I suppose.

You are Ed the Undying, Town 3-shot Unkillable

[Image

“I’ve got the ancient magic of the ages going here, and I’m seriously gonna grind you into paste.”

You may be lynched or killed up to three times without being removed from play. Multiple kills during a single night stack. After your third “death” you will become a tree stump (able to speak in the game thread but unable to do anything else, such as voting.)

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: Culted, 1x killproof then stump following

Thoughts: I love the roles that let me make them into perfect representations of their character. There’s a danger to that (see: Lazarus Long, CYOC I) but it can be rewarding. This one was one of those roles that let me do that. Didn’t get to see it play out, which was disappointing. Would have liked to have see spiesr get lynched, horsekilled, and shot all in the same day/night cycle just to see people’s reaction. :P

You are Gorgui Dieng, Mafia Roleblocker

Image

“I’m not scared to set a high goal. If I fail, at least I set a very high goal.”

Each night, you may target one player. If that player used an action that night, it will fail.

The mafia consists of Anarkistsdream (Canonizer), Whatsausage (Roleblocker), Lootifer (Procrastinator), and TheForgivenOne (Watcher). You will decide amongst yourselves who will carry out the mafia hit each night. That player will PM me the kill selection as well as their other action.

You win when the mafia can overpower all other factions.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Thoughts: I really didn’t know what to do with Sausage’s characters. I read over the descriptions he sent me over and over again. The one for Dieng included the phrase “Blocks shots”. And we had a winner.

You are Spaceman Spiff, Town Roleblocker

Image

“Have deathray blaster, will travel.”
Each night, you may use your stun ray to target one player. If that player used an action that night, it will fail.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Thoughts: Another one I struggled with, mainly because Spaceman Spiff always fails and never develops. True, Calvin himself has the same limited format as his alter ego to deal with, but at least Calvin has occasional story arcs and a good wingman to support him. I went with a freezeray so as not to overpopulate the game with killers (as it turned out, it was underpopulated with them, though there were other factors to that) despite that having no precedent in any Spaceman Spiff comic (at least not from my what my memory/research could turn up).

You are Time, Town Time Controller

Image

"We must always use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right” – Nelson Mandela

During the game, you may do any of the following:

- End the day early (this will force a lynch)
- Extend the day (up to 72 hours)
- End night early
- Extend the night (up to 48 hours)

Upon your death, lost time will be made up for any of the actions you have performed (e.g. if day is extended, an additional night phase will be added)

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: I don’t know that I had a plan for if this was scum. Probably would have been 3rd Party.

Thoughts: Neb decided to get all weird with his character choices. They were Time, Wind, and Death. Fortunately, I like weird character choices. I couldn’t think of anything for Death that wasn’t too much, and I had wind covered by Jak. So Time it was.

I don’t think a role has ever shaped a game so much all by itself. True, the aforementioned Lazarus Long did, but at least this wasn’t broken. It also played really well with the horse game, which was purely serendipitous. I enjoyed watching this in action, like Neb posting about being annoyed at the horse game, one minute later I get a pm to end the day. I did have to put some restrictions on it, though. When Neb tried to end Night 1 6 hours after it had started, I pushed his window opening back to 25% of the way through the phase.

You are William Wallace, Cult Recruiter

Image

“It’s all for nothing if you don’t have freedom”

Each night, you may recruit one player to your cause of liberating the town from its oppressors.

You win when your faction can overpower all others.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Notes: If Edoc had been town, he would have been a recruiter mason.

Thoughts: Having two cults was neat, even if a cult battle didn’t play out. This was also a neat play on the flavor, I thought. Since my usual color for cult was already being used, I had o pick another one. The traditional Wallace tartan color was my first choice, but as it turned out it was red, which obviously I couldn’t use. However, they do have a secondary green tartan. That’s why this cult was green. The more you know!

You are Banjo, Bobo, and Sydney the Clowns, Town Empowerer

Image

“Now wes old and such, and wes got memories we would rather forget and wes stopped our silly ways a while back. Nows wes paint smiles on our faces and wes try to make others laugh.”

Each day, you may select a player to make laugh. This will either make their power during the night unblockable or allow them to use their action twice. Using your power will make you melancholy, however, and you will take to drinking. As such, you will be unable to use your action on consecutive days.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Thoughts: This was probably the first OC for a CYOC that I actually really liked. The characterization in the writing and the depth of the characters was really neat, and it struck with a lot of melancholy. I thought it was cool. I kinda want to ask Zivel more about it. Zivel, tell us more about it. :D

You are Tyrion Lannister, Town Governor

Image

“Once you’ve accepted your flaws no one can use them against you.”

Once (and only once), you may prevent the lynch from taking place. This must be done within six hours of the declaration of dusk (or in advance of the final vote, either is fine).

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Thoughts: Tyrion is a character known for talking his way out of bad situations. He also tends to talk himself into them, as we often see.

I’m going to stop talking about this here because I like Game of Thrones, haven’t read the books, and hate spoilers. So yeah, don’t spoil it for me.

As for LD3, I regret that I wasn't able to give timely reminders about the horse game. RL has gotten the better of me lately, especially the past few weeks. That said, those reminders are not solely my prerogative.

You are Flo, Town Doctor

Image

“I’ll be here all week. I will; that was my schedule.”

Each night, you may target one player. That player will be protected from night kills.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Thoughts: I actually didn’t mind Flo early on the Progressive ad campaign when other people found her irritating. I've grown to dislike her over time, however. Trying to find a quote without having to sit through a commercial was actually pretty difficult. I’m sure I could have found a better one, but I didn’t have the patience.

Some questioned the use of Flo as a Doc. All I can say is insurance-->protection-->doc was the thought process.

You are Sherlock Holmes, Town Cop

Image

“I never guess. It is a shocking habit – destructive to the logical faculty”

Each night, you may target one player. You will learn that player’s alignment.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

Thoughts: There’s not a lot to say. This one’s a no-brainer really. Though if HotShot got lynched for claiming “Sherlock Holmes, Cop” I’d laugh my ass off. I had a note in here that he hadn't found any scum, and that night he investigated Doom. Mea culpa.

You are Peeta Mellark, Mafia Watcher

Image

“I’m more than just a piece in their Games”

During the night, you may hide yourself and watch another player. You will see all the actions that happen to that player.

Notes: If town, TFO would have been a Commuter. Replaced by MudPuppy.

Thoughts: Goddammit, TFO. Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, I’ll go ahead and say I don’t really care for The Hunger Games. I read the first book and didn’t think it warranted a sequel. One of the scenes that stuck out to me from the book was the one where Peeta paints himself to look like the mud. So that’s where this came from.

You are Rolf, Town Hot Potato

Image

“That’s my horse!”

Before each day, you may give me the names of up to five players. These players must participate in a hot potato game. These participants “pass the potato” by naming another participating player and saying “That’s my horse!” The player with the potato at the end of the day is killed.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.

Please confirm that you have received and understand your role in the game thread.

(You may choose the players at the time you receive this message)

Thoughts: There’s an interesting story behind this one. Sheep initially gave me a character who was a mad scientist, effectively asking me to give him the same role that he had last CYOC, which I refused. We went back and forth for a bit over what our definitions of “Choose Your Own Character” were and what he wanted out of a role (which, by the way, doesn’t matter :P) before he finally just sent me three characters like I asked. When I looked into Rolf, I found the That’s My Horse, and that was it. Sheep got the interesting role that he wanted and had more influence over the game than almost anyone else (save for maybe Neb). He even killed quite a few scum with it which was actually impressive.

• Thanks to everyone who played the game! This was the best CYOC yet and really pleased with how the game went. It's good to see at least one game garnering a good amount of activity in this forum and I'm glad that I got to run it.
 • Thanks especially to Rodion who asked for all the actions, etc. in advance and prompted me to actually write real commentary. Also, apologies to Rodion, who I never sent any of that stuff due to my busyness.
 • Asking for three characters instead of one ended up being a good idea, I think. In theory it was meant to prevent role repeats (which ended up happening anyway), but in practice I was also able to get creative with the roles based on where they ended up. Some defaulted to Third Party, which made for a more interesting game, and some people even had completely different characters based on the dichotomy. I didn't prioritize the characters a given person sent in in order to preserve that freedom, but I think a better game was played for it.
 • "Hot Potato Mafia" is now running through my brain as a concept I'd like to try. So many people pinned me as the "Horse Fucker" that I figured "Why not be a hose fucker?"... Well, you know what I mean. I'd be interested in opening up the hot potato mechanic to replace the lynch. It would be more chaotic, but it would also increase activity for sure.
 • If anything hasn't been answered yet, feel free to ask!

I would have loved to see sheepofdumb give the horse game to only one player.

I would have used the redirection every night if I hadn't been recruited (And actually planned to use it on whoever I got the name of but I guess you predicted that and gave me the name at the very end of the night). Being recruited I had to wait longer. I even had this really cool plan to redirect doom's gift to me or Spiesr and use it for our own selfish gains but the day went into another day and I never used it.

Betiko "clearing" edoc and then getting killed and turning up town is what messed up town... we believed his result but didn't know it was a mafia/anti-mafia gift rather than a regular investigation.

And I knew edoc was defending strike too much, that they were probably on the same team... I just picked the wrong one as the leader lol.

Good game overall, thanks for running it :)

By the way Hotshot, weren't you just Watson recently?

So for those of us who chose 3 different characters might be interesting to show who were your choices. Mine were:

Lelouch Lamperouge

Tyrion Lannister

Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite (in hindsight I don't know how this one would have worked out in a non-broken manner).
