On a similar note, I can't help much rant and rave, flaming "cloud" technology, since it is way too temping right now, and the fact that Windows 8 is almost guaranteed to make use of it. If you don't care about it, then this post is over - Comment and or move along

Windows 8 Rumors (And cloud rant)
I just finally got my first issue of MaximumPC in a few months, since they stopped erroneously sending me free issues for about 2-3 months. Interestingly, they've got an article about some leaked info about Windows 8. Sure enough, it is looking it is going to be the start of the true desktop Not-Private-Computer, or NPC for short. From the things being said about the information coming out, it is going to have facial recognition for logging into your own god damned account. Worse, it's going to be making a number of it's features "cloud" based, so that you cannot escape the option of being dependent on the internet for everything you need. To top all things off, there is talk that they are going to have a "zero-power" state that you can place your computer so that you can quickly reboot after turning your computer back on. I hate to say it, but if your computer is remaining in a zero-power-state, and you have everything still in memory, that means your computer is still on, and that also means someone is almost certainly using a backdoor to f*ck around with your data without you noticing anything, because you think your computer is "off". Now I know for a fact that you can freeze a computers memory in place when it is off by spraying liquid nitrogen on the memory, but this is something totally different. I smell trouble here, and I am utterly disappointed, if you do not mind understatements, that I've got nothing to look forward to in terms of personal computers in the future. I don't have a Mac, and I don't have a Smartphone, because those things are sealed up the way you would seal your fate if you jumped into a volcano - You can't tinker with the insides at all. The smartphones, however, take a life of their own. You can't put any personal software on them, unless you quite literally make investments to make that happen - I think you can figure out what I mean by that if you pay attention to tech news. I'm a bit lazy on elaborating.

. Does anyone even care that we are losing more control over subsequent computing devices that are churned out each year so much that one day we are going to be losing thousands of dollars when idiots buy entire libraries of music / videos on their "smart" machines when the day comes when servers either get compromised, destroyed, seized, or simply get shut down? Does anyone notice what happens when online services are shut down? You lose what you invested in them. I haven't lost ownership of anything I bought from Circuit City stores, despite all the brick and mortar ones in my county (and everywhere else?) shut down. Finally, when you put information on the cloud, you are no longer the only one who possesses the info. If you are dumb enough to put your important documents on the cloud, they are compromised, and you are subject to hoping that no one will take copies of them and call them your own. Also, this is a pretty easy-as-hell way to get the Feds/Homeland security at your door for putting stupid info on the cloud that makes some retard pre-emptively think you are some terrorist. Sound fun? It doesn't to me, though I'm sure a lot of you are getting good ideas. I am also feeling like I will conclude my rant, since I'm sure no one will think it is worthy of being noted for any reason anyways. I feel like I'm writing some essay or some other absurd thing.

Nice rant
And when it comes to elaborating, I'm more than a bit lazy.

All valid concerns, NightWolf. I don't think that you're alone in questioning the mindless enthusiasm techno-geeks have shown for 'cloud-based' systems. Blame Google for promoting the idea and making it marketable, however... Microsoft may just be taking it to the next level, as they are wont to do.

No, it's not an essay, it's a rant

And Microsoft will hate you for it until they stop supporting it.
But maybe there's hope on the horizon yet.

I'm probably not the only one that feels the day they finally make a new windows not based on 95 and XP is unable to access the internet can't come fast enough.
Apart from pictures I don't put anything personal on the internet. I buy CDs still (I know like windows 95 they're soon going way of the DOS). and if it's important it goes on paper via pen. I can burn it if I'm done and so far my files have not been hacked.
