I have a differing opinion on the second bit, but no, as far as I know no one on this site has ever run a FFVII mafia.

Re: FFVII Mafia
I want to say Advents Children was based off VII. Though I also never got into the series. I would be willing to play as I think it could be a cool set up.

I thought about that yesterday. Do you know if someone has ever made a tutorial on mafia game balance (preferably with formulas)?

I'd like something more in-depth on balance.

Every mod has a different way they balance their games. Its hard to create a definitive rule for balancing when every mod has a different definition on what "balanced" is. I would say just make a setup that looks balanced to you and then have a more experienced mod look over it for you. They will point out any issues that it has.
I probably won't play (for the reason below), but I would be happy to help you balance it. I know the basic storyline to the game and most of the characters so I'm not a complete stranger.

I downloaded FFVII through the PSN (before the whole hacking fiasco) and I have not been able to get into it. I play a lot of rpgs and strategy games, but this one is just too slow for me. Plus the interface is completely backward from what I'm used to.

It's a PS1 game, can't you get an emulator?
About the balance, simple initial questions.
1 - If it's a simply town/mafia game, I should be aiming at 50/50 odds, right?
2 - If it's a more complicated town/mafia/cult or town/mafia1/mafia2 game, should I be aiming at 33/33/33 odds?
3 - What happens if I add a SK? Being a loner usually means you'll have smaller winning odds than an actual "faction"? Would that be acceptable?

I can play it on my PS3, I just find the game boring. It moves too slowly (even by turn-based rpg standards) and I can't get used to the interface. I've tried to interest myself in it three times now (cuz I don't want to feel like I wasted $10) but each time I quit playing due to boredom.

1- In my games, I try to make it 50/50 odds. Although some mods like to give the town a little bit better chances of winning. Its up to you really. You just need to make sure its not so unbalanced that scum has no chance of winning. Anywhere from 50/50 to 60/40 is acceptable in my book.
2- Yea, thats how I generally do it
3- I've never actually put a SK in any of my games before. I've used 3rd party before, but never SK. You would need to ask someone else how it is typically done. I would probably agree with you though.

Re: FFVII Mafia
Holly Shit? 50 50 ? Only in a Fircoal game. In a game 0f 11 I would have 3 scum 17 would be 4 scum and a sk for me. Also depends on the number of cops and the power of roles.

I've been thinking about the idea. I already designed the mechanics of 4 characters.
How do you people prefer to make the setup?
1 - Establish the characters and open the thread with a determined ammount of spots/roles?
2 - See how many people are interested and then create the characters based on demand?

No, he meant 50/50 odds of winning, not number of scum/town.

1. Usually yes. A little leniency can be ok but as squirrel said too much inbalance can be detrimental.
2. Multiple factions can be hard to balance and honestly should not be used except in bigger games. Basically what you said about even odds spread between the factions is traditional logic.
3. Sk is a role that is traditionally seen as having lower odds of winning. There are certain ways to help balance it out (bulletproof or showing up innocent on investigation). Depending on the situation different abilities may work well (untrackable, one shot bp and delayed kill) depending on balance.

Option 1 is best. Changing up balance based on the number of roles can get tricky and to me it makes it look like the mod is not properly considering the balance of the game.

I usually start out with a the rough size of the game I'll plan, note down some characters or ideas and slowly flesh it out and balance it.

Re: FFVII Mafia
When I use an SKer role, it usually is the same ratio of town to scum about 70-75% characters town vs 20-25% characters mafia for me, but I might add extra investigative and protective roles to account for the extra nightkill coming from the SKer. I might give mafia some extra roles as well.

OOOOOOOOH!!!!! PLEASE MAKE CLOUD AND SEPHIROTH LOVERS!!!!
Maybe I should download/buy this game. I just downloaded a PS1 emu so I could play a decent Inuyasha game (or at least try to) (I only have Nintendo systems and for some reason the games on them suck or are in Japanese or something D: ) so I do have the hardware for it now. x3

I haven't modded a game yet, but for my first one (which I've already planned out) I'm going to have a goal for the amount of players I want and then I will adjust it depending on how many players sign up.

That's fine if for example, it's like 13 or 17 players for the setup and you see how many people sign up. Putting an openended number of players and trying to rebalance isn't usually a good idea.

I absolutely LOVE FF7... Would definitely be interested in playing or helping you balance it out (Whichever is preferred).
But... It was so artistically done.

I'd rather talk about balance to someone that doesn't intend to play (perhaps Squirrel), otherwise I'd be losing a player.

I probably don't know enough to play, I'd be happy to take a look if Squirrel wants to play.

ok, thanks for the tip. Are you suggesting I balance it first and then have a fixed amount of players.
Yeah, Rodion, if saf helps you balance your game, be prepared. he balances games pretty well. he's on the opposite end of the scale from fircoal.
