Stereoscopic mapmaking...

Post by natty dread »

I thought some of you might find this interesting... The idea of making a stereoscopic map popped in my head suddenly, and I wanted to give it a shot... so here's a quick little proof-of-concept doodle:
Parallel view: You need to relax your eyes, sort of stare "through" the image, so that each eye looks at it's own image... you should see a 3rd image forming in between of the two images, then just focus on that middle image until you see it clearly. Try adjusting your distance from the monitor if you're unable to focus.

Cross-eye view: These types are much easier to view in my opinion - I never fully mastered the parallel view myself, the cross-eye ones are much easier to focus on. What you do is you just cross your eyes like when you try to stare at the tip of your nose, until the images combine in the middle as a 3rd image, then focus your view on the middle image until you see it clearly.
Parallel view:

imagine squinting your eyes, grinding your teeth, sweating like mad trying to see the stereoscopic image during a speed freestyle game.

and after all that you see this guy:

Lol, but I wasn't thinking of CC maps when I thought of this... I just thought it would be a cool thing to do.

I'm terrible at these games. I can never seem to look at the image just right.

Here's a cross-eye version - I find them much easier to view than the parallel images. For cross-eye stereoscopy, you need to cross your eyes so that your left eye looks at the right image and right eye looks at the left image... It's easy, you just cross your eyes until the third image appears, then just sort of focus on the third image.

After about 15 minutes my wife asked me what I was doing and said I looked really stupid.

I couldn;t see anything other than the two map images and gave myself a headache.

Thanks for that. <sigh>

Maybe I'm not the best at explaining the technique...

Try the cross-eye version, it's much easier. All you do is cross your eyes, like when looking at something really close. Try putting a finger next to the tip of your nose and staring at your finger, then just slowly move the finger away while keeping your eyes in that position. You should see the 2 map images as 3 images now, with the middle image being a sort of overlay of the 2. Once you can focus your gaze on the 3rd image, you should see it in 3d.

Again, it takes practice... and seems to be easier for some than for others.

I can't see the parallel one (I think due to nystagmus), but the cross-eyed one worked out nicely. Neat.

Maybe that's why my wife asked me what I was doing on the laptop? :o

couldn't we make a map about that?

would not be hard to make i figure.

only people with a rank above conquerer would be able to play it.

brilliant idea. so here's the map. if you don't see it you're not ranked high enough. and it's a shame that you don't because it's a real beauty. a masterpiece.

it's blurry because you don't have a high enough rank. but the fact that you manage to at least see something means you're getting closer

There's something funny going on at the edges of the image... I'd suggest cropping it down by about 3px on all edges - that should be just enough to sort it. The instructions/legend could probably be slightly clearer, but after one or two games most people would have worked out what's going on - and I can't think of an obvious way to do it differently.

I had some free time, so I whipped up a quick xml: http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/12/18 ... 0//xml.xml

I'm a little concerned about the 888s in a few spots... I think zimmah's got the right idea - you may have to go supersize with this one.
