Both? People are that stupid, but it's meant as a joke.
There are other similar videos for other countries.

That all said... and I agree with it...
1) it's still funny.
2) it's also sad that there are people walking around this country who are this ignorant and stupid.
ignorant = uninformed
My sister... college grad, nursing school grad, ask her about medical stuff and how to take care of it she knows her shit... ask her about math she can handle it.
... now ask her about history or geography or current world politics... she has absolutely no clue.
She's clearly not "stoopid"... she just has no interest in world politics or history or geography... and hence would stumble and bumble over some of these same questions.
To people in the catbox who are into these things... this seems stoopid. It really isn't... it really is just ignorant.

The Chasers are somewhat of an Aussie institution - They have finished now but the have done plenty of hilarous skits - At the time that they produced this clip I thought it was hilarious - However, the fact is that I am sure they probably interviewed over 100 or so people for this segment and managde to use the 'stupidest' that they interviewed to make funny skit.

I think the most inexcusable thing in this video is the question about the triangle...
That guy should be mathematically tortured by an undead version of Newton or receive some similar punishment.

I agree. Intelligence isn't so much knowing facts. Math/science/chemistry/biology/history/geography/social sciences, I know a lot. I know NOTHING (I mean, nothing) about cars, and people call me stupid because of it.
This one time I was bored and took an I.Q. test from a booklet from the 70s. There was one question that asked "which one doesn't fit?" and listed off a bunch of words I didn't know. I obviously got that question wrong, but I found out later that all but one of the words listed were cheeses (I forgot what the odd-word-out was). I mean, I don't know SHIT about cheeses (and they were obscure cheeses too) and I got a few points off my I.Q. from that test because of it. Kind of bullshit.

yes i think a lot of people get nervous in these situations.. and as far as word-related IQ-tests i think they are valid for say companies trying to grasp your basic level of education, but ofcourse it is very bias, as a non-nativspeaker will have a lot of trouble with these kind of questions.. but at the same time a mathematician might have a better successrate in anything dealing with numbers (even if in the context logical reasoning) simply because they feel comfortable with numbers.. an architect might score high on spacial orientation and a french dude might kick aog's arse in the obligatory cheese-part of the test..

Human intelligence is overrated and the World is fortunate to have enough smart people around to keep basic utilities functioning. Of course all the "people" who have advanced technology over the past hundred years are probably aliens from another planet, who are also hoarding all the wealth and pretty much own everything of significance. There are no national boundaries for ignorance, you can find dummies everywhere.
The Tonight Show has it's Jaywalking segment starting around 1992, which is essentially the same thing and I'm sure there were others that predate that.

Good guess. Jack Parr, the Tonight Show host before Johnny Carson

had "Man in the street" interviews as a regular feature.

Well ,these question are for small kids, country on letter U, in what town are Berlin Wall, Australia are North Korea?
I must say that probably American are not stupid, its more naive, and realy majority of Americans dont realy care abouth anything. If they have to eat, drink, money to bye good car, house, or to have for enterteiment, they dont want to know nothing abouth anything outside USA.
Unfortunatly, they become stupid in these interviev, because its better to say "i dont know",instead to give these answers.

I'm usually inclined to defend the US when Symmetry posts his daily passive agressive thread similar to this, however, qwert provides a good perspective. The relative wealth of the US allows a greater ambivalence by Americans in international affairs. They don't care what their government does to keep the gravy train running as long as it keeps running. This is why the US is so dangerous to world peace.
I think Canada and many nations in western europe are the same but their weakness and general smallness removes the danger component.

It's called editing. He had to ask 20 people to get that answer, yet he does not show the other 19 intelligent Americans. This is all old stuff though but it makes for great stereotyping! For example, my answer to those questions would not make the cut since a correct answer does not fit into the questioner's agenda.
Gimme 5 minutes of your time for 15 questions and you will be receiving hate mail by the end of the week.

lol i was administered an i.q. test a few years ago (the wais-iii) and one of the questions was "why is an income tax necessary?"
the test just ASSUMED that you would agree that an income tax was necessary. it was part of a section on general reasoning or something like that.
such bs...
oh and about the video, other countries are butthurt about america's success so they take cheap shots like this with video editing. nothing more than typical britfaggotry.

Considering how many TV segments exist out there about dumb Americans done by Americans,
your words are equally stereotypical and the Brit scatology doesn't fit.

hmm, im not french.
Hey qwert - what country are you from? Do you think your countrymen can answer questions better than the Americans?
Yes i belive they will know better then americans, expecialy questions like "what day whas atatck on twin tover 9/11 hepend" How much you need to be ignorant so that you dont recognise answer in question?
Like i say,if you have money for everything what its nesesary, then you dont want to bother yourself abouth anything outside USa. And because that you have Vietnam,Iraq,Yugoslavia,Afghanistan,Libya, and many other conflict, where any news on US Television, are prepared to be true, and in fact, its a lies, but US citizens, and majority belive in everything what presenters say.
Same like in these video, host give you map of world, show you australia with name North Korea, and people belive that these is North Korea. Sad,very very sad.

That question doesn't test knowledge; it tests how well someone pays attention to the question. I believe "ignorant of world events" people exist throughout the world, so I don't think your countrymen would know better than Americans. Unfortunately, no such video exists.

This is also a different phenomenon, and one that is also practiced throughout the world. I highly doubt the Chinese are airing news footage of human rights violations, for example.
In sum, while I think many Americans are stupid, I also think many people in the world are stupid. So it's not an American phenomenon.

Yeah it's not like Obama went on a 1 week tour in South America and then surprised American citizens with the news we were invading Libya upon his return with no vote in Congress.
If only we weren't so stupid!
