Age of Buccaneers

Post by Kabanellas »

Map Name: Age of Buccaneers
Mapmaker(s): Kabanellas
Number of Territories: N/A
Special Features:
What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made:

I’ve been working for quite some time on a map that could recreate the buccaneer/pirate phase of the colonization of the Caribbean, a time scope ranging from 1650 to the early 18th century.
The Spanish were the largest colonization power with a lot of bases all throughout the Caribbean. They were bringing silver and gold from the Americas to Europe which made those convoys (Silver Train and the Treasure Fleet) very appealing to Pirates and Buccaneers.
The other colonization powers (the English, French and Dutch) often recurred to pirates to whom they would give Letters of Marque authorizing them to wage war against their enemies (usually Spain) possessions.

Age of Buccaneers

The game board consists eminently on a new approach on the use of killer neutrals. Basically the XML should allow bonus to be dealt before triggering them. This way all loot regions (which are all killer neutral here) could be taken every turn and give some bonuses before returning to their neutral state.

as for the rest, we'd have 8 starting points divided in 2 types of game-play:

Colonial Powers
    The Spanish
    The English
    The French
    The Dutch

Pirates/Buccaneers
    Blackbeard (Edward Teach)
    Sir Henry Morgan
    François l'Ollonais (Jean-David Nau)
    Laurens de Graaf

All players will start on Level 1 of their commitment level scale. Upgrading levels will give access to new parts of the map and players will also be expanding action capabilities as they move further up.

Wow, great start Kab, can see you've been working on this for a while. :)
only thing that wasn't totally clear (gfx thing) was the ZoC half covering/bordering icons/army shadows...i didn't quite understand what was going on there...like those NE of Tortuga

Its great...I think it would quickly become my favorite map ...as I generally love this topic and most things associated with it.

My ONLY comment is...I recently bought a 27" apple iMac, and thought no map would ever take up all that space. Every map I looked at seemed tiny in
comparison. It completely fills my screen, and is actually rather difficult to play I'm guessing on my 17" laptop and a nightmare for my iPhone...

Well, Fleet 2 ZoC embraces: Eleuthera Trade Ship (sharing it with Fleet 1) / Tortuga Trade Ship / Port-de-Paix Trade Ship (sharing it with Fleet 3). It seems clear to me , but I'm suspicious of course...

Must confess that I really didn't intend to make another supersize map - I've done it on King's Court 2 and that was enough for me :). The problem is that to capture such a large area like the Caribbean with all I wanted to add there in terms of gameplay it become an almost impossibility to decrease the width below 1.100 px and still maintain a good degree of readability comfort...

I'll work on that though.... I just need to know if we can really take this one forward because of the XML issue concerning killer-neutral regions being bonus capable

Killer neutrals cannot be part of a bonus as they get killed of before the bonuses are awarded. As for the size issue, sent a PM to nobodies to see what to do with this one. As soon as he posts or lets me know, we will all know on how to proceed.

I know that koontz. Like i said in the first post:

This way all loot regions (which are all killer neutral here) could be taken every turn and give some bonuses before returning to their neutral state.

It's just a matter of changing the order of things...... Maybe Lack could be open to this suggestion. This would open a vast field of new possibilities.

Is there a solution to get this moving in case this doesn't happened or take 3 years to happen?

before I do anything here, I'd really like this possibility to be seriously looked at - I honestly think that it could bring new possibilities to game-play.

Sorry for the delay mate.
For the size of the map it's better if you can stay within the guidelines if possible, if you can't please use every extra pixel in a thoughtful manner!
Even if for the large I'm not asking to stay within strict limits, for the small I kindly ask to you to produce the smaller map you can produce. More smaller, more closer to the 630x600, better it is.
If you need you can make them different (same gameplay, I mean just simpler graphics to fit everything)

I'm sorry guys.... I just can't make this one so small. :( 630x600 is the usual small size for maps which would be impossible for this one...

I'm thinking that I could go as small has 950 pixels width for this one at the most! (it has 1.100 px currently)

Anyway, like I said to NB, I'm putting this map on hold 'till that possible change concerning killer-neutrals can be evaluated. This game play is far to based on it for this map to work any other way. CC is always evolving and that can be a possible direction. I'm patient - I can wait 5 years to put my next map out :)

[Moved] to Melting Pot as no stamps have been issued.

If the mapmaker wants to continue with the map, then one of the Cartography Assistants will be able to help put the thread back into the Foundry system, after an update has been made.

you think you're going to get lack to make an xml feature for this map?

Dream on, man... dream on... lack doesn't care about the foundry and never will.

I hope not Natty, or people will eventually leave the Foundry for good :?

anyway, it seems like it is an easy change to do that will not affect any other existing map and will give extra possibilities to new ones....
