Zoom Out: Baghdad [Winner: JBlombier]

Post by jeremscarem »

Congrats to JBlombier for winning this tourney!

This is the fourth tournament in a series I call Zoom Out.*

In this tournament, you’ll start small, conquering first a city and then zooming out gradually to battle for bigger and bigger territories until you conquer the entire planet. For my other similar tournaments, follow the links below.

*With apologies to BluU, who has run for some time an excellent series called "BluU's zoom into." Check it out.

Okay, here's how this works:

Maps
Round 1: Battle for Iraq!
Round 2: Gilgamesh
Round 3: WWI Ottoman Empire
Round 4: Alexander's Empire
Round 5: Middle East
Round 6: Dark Continent
Round 7: Eastern Hemisphere
Round 8: World 2.1

Settings
Standard, Sequential, Automatic, Escalating, Chained, Sunny, No trench, No limit

Format
Players will be divided (random.org) into four groups of six players each.

In Round 1, each group plays a single six-player game.
The first player eliminated is out of the tournament; the remaining five move on to the next map.

In Rounds 4, 6, and 8, the groups are shuffled and one is eliminated, like so:
Round 1: 4 groups of 6 players
Round 2: 4 groups of 5 players
Round 3: 4 groups of 4 players
Round 4: 3 groups of 4 players
Round 5: 3 groups of 3 players
Round 6: 2 groups of 3 players
Round 7: 2 groups of 2 players
Round 8: 1 group of 2 players

question: shouldn't you switch Alexander's empire and middle east? Seems to me the middle east is smaller than Alexander's empire.

Great question. With a lot of these maps it's hard to be totally sure about which is more "zoomed in" or "zoomed out."

If you look at the four edges of both maps, you'll see in fact that Middle East extends beyond Alexander's Empire in three directions:

North: ME extends to Georgia, whereas AE stops at Armenia
South: ME extends to the bottom of the Arabian Peninsula, where as AE doesn't include Arabia at all
East: ME includes all of Pakistan, whereas AE only includes a tiny piece of modern-day Pakistan; according to Wikipedia, the "Gedrosia" territory corresponds with modern-day Baluchistan (which on the ME map is well to the west of the edge of the map).

Only in the West does ME stop at Istanbul where AE extends to include Greece.

So, I think I'll keep it the way it is. But as you can see I had to do some pretty thorough research to make sure I had things in the right order : )

Thanks for the suggestion! Always welcome!
