General Tourny Question

I am playing in one tourny where it says i play 5 games and the player who advances is the player who wins 3 out of 5. I am playing in another, where it just says, 3 games, 48 (out of 64) move on. If it is just based on wins, that could leave a leaderboard with a 16 place tie at 3-0 and a 48 player tie at 0-3. That's obviously an unlikely scenario but only an exaggeration of what is a very likely scenario and that is ties where nobody has won a game. How is it decided who moves on?

Links to tournaments are needed to help you (although I'm guessing the 2nd one is an auto tournament). And having 16 players go 3-0 and 48 players go 0-3 in a 64 player can't happen mathematically.
