Is there a known way to increase the number of stars you have - except playing in tournament ?

Also, how chouette was able to join this tournament ?? I am assuming common star I given to player that plays a lot of game and log in CC very often.

If you have earned any credits in the past you can use those to get boxes of stars in the new store.
If you have lots of other stars, you can try sacrificing some to get others.
You can also go to the store, purchase credits, and go buy some star boxes with those credits.
You can also get them from activity like logging in, winning games, playing games etc. but those are harder / more random.

Also, you forgot to mention that they could volunteer for the Beta Team, earn Beta Bucks, and use those to buy stars...

You need to play games on the specified maps.
