Atheists You Know...

Post by Phatscotty »

and the shit they say....

First and foremost

I don't have anything against Atheists. I have an Atheist friend, so I'm covered. There is no concrete evidence either way, so I aint mad at ya. To each their own. I'm not trying to tease or mock or argue on this one, I just want to identify a certain kind of Atheist and have a community chat about the Atheists you know and what they say and do. And if someone wants to go ahead and make a 'Religious people you know...' thread, go for it! I got tons of crazy shit to post there! :)

My entire family is Atheist. As many know I was an Atheist for 2 semesters while in college. That said, virtually every single holiday when the family gets together, it's just a matter of time before someone says out of nowhere 'Jesus Christ is the greatest myth of all time' or 'like Jesus really came back from the dead...C'MON!' or 'how could anyone possibly know December 25th was Jesus birthday?' The Masonic lineage also shows up for round 2. 'Jesus is just a combination of Spartacus and Mythra' along with a bunch of other esoteric hubbub. Those are all things I hear every single (religious related) holiday without fail, and plenty more that can take up hours of everybody reassuring everybody else that we are all smart and none of us are dumb because none of us believe in sky-daddy fairy tales.

So, one year I brought my girlfriend with who is religious. Her and her family have had an impact on me to put it simply, and yes the religious person I know who blames everything on demons is her sister. That year I asked my family 'hey, okay, we all get that religion is phony jabroni and that there is no proof, but I'm bringing Tiffany with this year, so please for one year can we skip all the dogmatic negativity? I would appreciate it :)' .....yeah.....right! First couple hours were fine, but I guess the family simply could not hold out any longer and then the 'religion is a crutch for the weak' bomb got dropped and it actually sparked some real debate for once and of course I was taking sides with my huny-buny while also not discounting or arguing down anyone else. Needless to say, it was another family holiday that left a bad taste in my mouth. Besides me being stubborn and admitting I don't believe in hell (which brought a tear to Tiff's eye) and I had to explain that the entire 2 hour ride home, and besides dinosaurs coming up and Tiffany saying half-heartedly 'dinosaurs are a hoax' which got loud laughter and brought out the paleontology books.... finally I asked the entire family 'so if all of it is bullcrap, why in the blue hell do we always celebrate the religious holidays???' Mostly the answer was 'well the family gets together and that is a good thing...' and I was like 'yeah but WHY does the family get together?' and nobody had a response for that so I declared that from now on in my family the holidays are about FAMILY and not about things nobody believes in.

So yeah, that's shit Athiests I know say

Seriously, we are all entitled to our beliefs no matter how far fetched they are. Your family should not have done that to Tiffany.

lol, sorta know what you mean Scotty. The guy who introduced me to CC almost 10 years ago (has it really been that long?..sheesh) is an atheist. We almost never argue about anything, but all his atheist buddies just can't stop trying to initiate an argument. We'll be playing poker and drinking, and all of a sudden they'll bring stuff up. I wonder sometimes if it's an attempt to misdirect me when they have a bad hand. I'll be talking about the Blackhawks or the BeerFeast festival coming up, and they'll literally start with the whole "religion is nothing but a crutch" line. I just reply, "look, are we gonna play poker or what, you pagan hippies?"

Good guys for the most part, but I feel like they're obsessed with trying to convert me.

You have to admit they can be real downers, though. A fanatic is much more fun and exciting than a wet blanket.

Atheists talk about physics and other science stuff mostly. Sometimes they'll fraternize about "The Big Bang Theory", "Game of Thrones", or "The Hobbit"; but for the most part hanging out with them is quite safe and secure.

With Theists, it's like an adventure everyday...waiting for the end of the world and the second coming of Jesus...being pissed off about abortion and hoping Gays will stop marrying and go back to become pastors and priests.

Myself, I'm agnostic. I can't tell you for any type of certainty that there is a god or not. However, in this life experience, this has become my conclusion (and I think I shared it once before in the forums):

If there is a God, then why is there suffering? Just so He can test our faith? Why do little children (innocent and loving) get horrible diseases? If there is a God, He or She or It is not merciful at all; but a horrid, vile prankster.

Therefor, my conclusion is that if there is a God, then He must be Evil.

You are all worshiping the wrong GOD!

I am better off just not knowing (and I don't think an atheist can truly say one way or another).

Let's say, theoretically speaking, that a God didn't allow suffering and didn't test anyone. Then everyone would complain that he was a pussy and an absentee Dad. He can't win so he's probably decided to fuck-all and go with what gets him out of bed in the morning.

If one is conceited enough to believe they are so sure that god doesn't exist, I put them in the same category as those that believe god does exist.

Who is the god that you are referencing? And, to help guide the discussion, would you please provide examples of statements about the world that you think are surely true?

See, I rent to a religious guy, and we talk about religion a lot. Usually he always end up reverting to it in the end when our convos go 1-2 hours, unless I make a sudden and sharp departure first. I don't think he has ever mentioned the end of the world, Jesus coming back, hmm abortion... I don't think so. Gays... well during the marriage debate I guess that was impossible to not talk about gays. End of the world.... trying to think when and even if I have ever heard that ....except of course from Atheists and climate changers. This one guy who turned his life over to drugs at one point and much later gave his life to the Lord and has been saved.... he talked about it more than most I have known and for possibly longer than anyone I have know (going on 10 years or something?).... He said upon viewing the Yelawolf/Eminem video Best Friend..... 'God's warriors are here bro. They aren't on the way, they are here walking this earth RIGHT NOW!'

but I don't think I have ever heard anyone say Jesus is coming or had a conversation like that, except from/with Atheists. I get most or all believe eventually the messiah will return at some point in time. But, thinking about it, isn't it kinda inevitable? Maybe when I was a kid I might of heard things like that. Even the demon girl I don't think has ever said or post anything about any of that. She had strong opinions about marriage, but she had a gay in the family so she was too scared to talk about it in public, like many others.

perhaps, because there is immense unbearable horrifically painful and torturous suffering and tragic loss, therefore there is a God, and there always will be? That 'suffering' you question.... isn't that really just 'the weak' that the crutch is for??

Yawn.

Yet again the world is beset upon Phatscotty's righteous door. Never fear, he knows the one, true path, for all is clear to him.

Why do religious people, many but not all, worry so much about what the guy next door is doing?

Why do they insist in forcing their views and beliefs on others?

Why do they insist only their view is correct?

Where did they get these ideas?

Those are questions religious people should be asking themselves about their pastors and other leaders in their churches.

Blind faith is not good. OK, well the band was awesome but as a religious principle, it's bad...mmmkay.

I have to say that the subject seldom comes up. Except in CC, or when someone knocks on my door to save me.

Ha, yeah. Look at all those atheists/agnostics keeping their views and opinions to themselves.

+1
IRL the only moments I have ever talked or heard anyone here debate about atheism or christianism were religion class in high school, Jehovah witnesses, and on the news when something unusual came up.
Conversely on CC it's as common as crying about dices.
