To say Social Security, Medicare, VA can't be touched will lead to its downfall. Everything in life needs to be monitored, updated, corrected and improved.

Agree with HR. The do-or-die moment to save social security was about 10 years ago. There's no more runway left. We used up all the runway refusing to make changes because they weren't 100% what we wanted.

It might still be possible to preserve a hollowed-out version of it if something happens in the next 12 months. Maybe.

But the idea that social security will exist in its current form in 2040 is supported by hope and aspiration, not by math or accountancy.
