-------- If you look at today ,technology...Is bad...Kids don't learn basic math counting skills...Wave your phone buy stuff..Sad....I notice time and time again...Even though, the register does the math for them...You hand them cash...IT IS FUNNY (but sad) watching them trying to count money as they take it out of the register to give you your change...THE LOOK ON THEIR FACES , AT THE START, WHEN THEY TELL YOU YOUR TOTAL , WHEN THEY RING YOU UP....YOU HAND THEM CASH... ...but still sad...America needs to get away from phone paying apps...etc...etc....Get back to cash...money...coins etc....IT'S also bad enough...Kids are not taught, or they don't know how to sign their name anymore.....This the America for the future everyone wants....Can't do basic math in your head...Can't sign your name...

I posted a rather long piece there, and, of course, there are other opinions and posts.

As far as education, there is some wisdom there by ConfedSS, but I do not agree with all the educational points he made.

Yes, children today can rarely do math "in their heads." Many cannot make change, unless the machine (electronic, nearly always) TELLS them what the amount of change is.

The world is going electronic; NO DOUBT. Is counting change and writing in cursive a needed skill, a good skill to know, or one that is basically UNNEEDED going forward?

I once saw an Graduation exam for high school for the state of Kansas, circa 1890. One skill tested was MULTIPLYING by Roman Numerals. THAT is not a skill needed today or in 1950. Standards do change, and technology drives much of that change today.

Want someone to show you how to work an app? Ask a TEEN, not a Boomer. Need someone to make change for a cash transaction? ask a Boomer, not a TEEN or Gen Z or Gen Alpha.

Cash is becoming less important each day. BUT, if the power goes out, as it did here in Central VA, one may have to make change without an electronic machine.

The pace of change is too fast to absorb. My generation had whiz kids who could code in COBOL. And by the time their carreers were at a reasonable point, they were passed by a new generation of whiz kids who wrote in FORTRAN, who in turn were passed by the whiz kids of C, and then Java, and then Christ knows what has replaced that.

Throughout history skills have gone obsolete, but there used to be a reasonable time horizon where you could see it coming and make adjustments.

It's getting to the point where even the futurists don't know what's going on before it's left in the past.

Anyone heard of the movie called "Future Shock"? I think it was based on a book by the same title by Alvin Toffler.

The pace of change seems to be growing much faster, even exponentially. In other words, change seems to happen more quickly as Technology advances so rapidly. What used to take 30 years now change as rapidly as 3-5 years (or so).

Look at phones, music, cameras, movies (Film vs VHS vs CD vs streaming, now morphed into and on too many platforms)...on to...?? And computers and electronics. Any have and still USE an iPod or a Walkman..??
