Well, I recommend that you read the how to make a map handbook pinned in the map tips and tricks area. However, I also caution that while sounding clear, that the process as applied is actually very different. So read some threads in the map ideas section and get an idea for what people want.
Are you experienced in using photoshop or gimp? If so, start working on your graphics, leaving as much as possible on separate layers. Just make the graphic fit the standard sizes listed in the map handbook. I recommend making it at the small size first.
Otherwise, I am willing to help provide input and feedback. I would help with a map but I'm not sure if I have the time right now between the maps I'm starting, finishing, and developing for others.
New map makers are strongly needed.

Re: Producing Maps....?
are you said, you have read some things around the foundry,
like the how to make a map hand book
1 tip i would say to you is read the map making tools.
if you want to do the graphics, then i would recomend photoshop, but if you want a free tool then use GIMP, which is listed on the map making tools
if you want to see if people are interested in the idea, you could always post it in the map ideas announcement, and see if people are interested.
you dont have to be anything special at doing graphics, i wasnt when i started my map, and im not now! but you will always get help from people and suggestions through-out the production of the map.
all maps start in the map ideas sub-forum, so if/when you post your draft ready for production of the map, post it there.
if you make a new thread there but it is only an idea, not a map's production, it will be merged with the map ideas announcement.
so if you choose to make a thread, please include a draft.
theres more things to tell you but my mind isnt all there at the moment

Can we help this woman instead of spamming in her thread? If nothing else, I would suggest posting in the new map ideas thread and asking for help. PM me if you have any questions.

the second and third posts pretty much covered it. Tom gave an excellent explanation.

You come up with an idea for the map, first. Then you go to an image creating/editing program like photoshop or GIMP (there are plenty more, just don't use MS Paint). You draw the image of your idea - create a map with a title, legend, continents, territories, etc. Then go to a photo uploading site like photobucket or imageshack and upload the photo. Then create a thread in the map ideas subforum where you show us your image (put the URL from the uploaded site in [bigimg] tags) and post all of the information required for the first post (number of territories, number of continents, and any non-standard gameplay features).
Then the community responds to the map, and from there you advance as explained in the "How to make a map" handbook.

basically, once you have made at least a first draft, then you want to start a new thread for it in the Map Ideas, and have the image posted as well. Thats just how to get started
Also, if your using GIMP and have no clue how to do stuff, then drop me a pm for help, cause im really good with GIMP
What is a map?
when i first came here, i didnt even know what a map was (an image)
so i think that we need to get that clear to people

Re: Producing Maps....?
Well first before you even start a map,you must decide do you have 6 month time to get any kind of feedback or request(ridiculos or no ridiculos
,bad or good
,valid or no valid
)and to reply to all these feedback. Also you will need to change hundred small minor things on map how people say(again to apply only valid and good things
).You also must expect some kind of conflict
,because some people can be sticky with hes vision of map.Do you have patience for all these things?
If you have then you can start with map idea.
If you think that these is to much for your brain, then its better to give feedback to other map topic insted to receive.
You decide what is best for you.
