Ranking Reform

Post by kletka »

Concise description:
  • Keep the old ranking system
  • Add a new ranking system

Specifics:
  • The new ranking is more of a ladder type
  • It is reset from time to time, with everyone going to 1000 at the beginning of new ladder
  • Each game results in computing two ranks in parallel: old rank and new ladder rank
  • Ladder system should have parallel titles, for instance, feudal: serf, knight, baron, lord, earl, duke, king, or naval, cook-admiral

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Ladder ranks won't be affected by points inflation
  • It will improve social structures as higher rank players tend to cluster together in private games...
  • It will give a chance to newly improved players to get to the top quickly without a need to catch up with current top players
  • It will create extra excitement without breaking current structures, like medals did

kletka, I think your suggestion is identical to the one being discussed by qwert and others ... if you agree let me know and I'll lock this one so that focussed discussion can continue there.

No, it is not. Dont you need to pass TOEFL to show you can read at least to become a moderator  ?

qwert suggests to use points earned in the old system to determine the most improved player. It is deeply flawed for many reasons, probably raised in the discussion.

I suggest to have a parallel (ladder) system reset every so often. The main difference is that every game will have 2 calculation of points, not one as in qwert's suggestion. In particular, everyone starts new ladder season on 1000

I also prefer this idea to qwert's one. It does not have the flaw of using the points scored in the "original" scoreboard also for the partial scoreboard.

I also think it would prevent the problems of point inflation and players picking their oponents. Hihg ranked players that only play other high ranked players wouldn't be so high ranked in this partial scoreboard. On the other hand, really skilled players would be high ranked in both scoreboards.

The only problem I see is when to reset the partial scoreboard. Maybe once every 3 months or so?

I worked hard to achieve the rank of Lt....then Captain...and then the "new" rank structure appeared, and I ost those ranks and went back to Sgt 1st class...and I was PISSED ! Seems that there has to be a better way to keep those ranks you earn, and not reward the top players by putting higher ranks out of reach.

If you restructure ranks, then to be fair ....all present members get the points added to retain thier ranks, and the newbies can work thier way up. My current rank I earned...not given to me. Losses I have endured find me at my present rank, and that's OK, it's on ME..not some re-ranking scheme.

Allow players to choose which title they want, i.e. : King, duke / General / Colonel...not assign the feudal ranks unless requested.

Ummmmm I could be wrong about this...maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying but isn't it easier now to get a "higher" rank? Major used to be 2500...it's now 2000. Similarly Captain (which you claim to have been at) was 2000...it's now 1800. You should have converted to a Major then. I'm not sure how you losing points corresponds to getting mad about the "new" rank structure...
