Team games hidden from New Recruits *To-Do*

Post by howie »

Ban newbs from doubles and triples games, its totally unfair for the person that ends up with one because the majority of the time they deadbeat, leaving a partner with no support from the start

Bad idea, just because some new players dont return doesnt mean we should punish all the new players. Try making some friends here, or play with people you have played with before and know that they will stick around.

I don't think it's a bad idea. Stopping people from joining team games until they've completed at least one game hardly counts as a punishment, and it would cut down hugely on the deadbeating teammate problem.

This has been suggested several times in many different forms. I think the bottom line is we don't want to discourage anyone from coming back to play. I remember the first game I set up I didn't realize how the game worked and went deadbeat on the first few games that I signed up for. But later I came back and haven't left since.
So just remember we were all noobs at one time and we wouldn't have wanted to be restricted when we first came to the site.

As iceman said, get a partner and play team games with him if you really want to.

and just 'cause a guy's a newb, doesn't mean he's a poor player. and just 'cause he's played a lot of games doesn't mean he knows what he's doin'.

but if you do get stuck with a deadbeat, then yeah, it's pretty unfair.

perhaps if there was a "dump game" button and all players press it who are still in the game, then the game gets deleted: no point awarded to anyone.

i think its a great idea. It would be more incentive for them to stick around. They have play so many singles games, and then they will get a reward of a doubles game.

Well, then you can deadbeat in your single game...
when you've finished your first or 5 first single games you can join doubles and triples...

you might discourage a few from coming back, but if they are here to play teamgames I'm sure they can play a single game first.

but having it like this you might discourage me from playing anything more...
I got stuck in a tripples game where I was the only one in my team really playing...

I remembered my first game, I played it well and didn't miss a single turn.
and if I had any questions I asked it in chat and got help.
in my first double game I didn't know you could fortify eachother, but I learned it after the first turn...

So IMO this is a great idea... let the people that joines the site to never come back do so with single games and not team games.

I do not agree. Just telling someone that they can't play a certin game might keep them from coming back. Besides if they are going to deadbeat in a team game they will deadbeat in a singles game, and thats not fair to the other players in the singles game.

The first game I joined was a triples game, I didn't mean to join it and ended up with two players (one of them new) who just attacked their own team. It has put me off team games and I haven't played one since.
So, from my own experience, I think something like this might be a good idea.

You know, up till now I was against any sort of restriction on New Recruits.

However, I'm reading several threads where people are asking for separate scoreboards because it is allegedly easier to win points playing team games with a doubles partner. See Doubles games and their affect on rankings and Seperate rankings for individual and team

I think there is in fact a bias. Everyone has the same chance of being helped or screwed by a deadbeat in a standard game. When someone deadbeats in a team game the "buddies teams" always benefit and the "pickup teams" always lose.

Think about it - two established partners start a public doubles game. Would you join spot #3? There is a large chance that you'll get screwed if you do. Even our moderators have suggested not to join, rather "play with friends or join a clan".

I did some analysis and discovered that 80% of auto-kicks in team games were players with a ranking today of New Recruit (73% if I include all types of games). So if we blocked New Recruits from team games it would solve most of the team deadbeat problem, even reducing the need for two scoreboards. If we simply hide team games from the join page, New Recruits won't be hassled with error messages and such.

In the Suggestions Box "No Points For New Recruit Deadbeats" is listed as to-do. But that's more work, doesn't address the nuisance of having to play the game with a deadbeat teammate, and is perhaps overkill on standard and terminator games.

So, now I'm leaning towards implementing this suggestion in the next update...

I had this problem in mind when I first suggested the no points for new recruit deadbeats, but simly not letting them play team games is indeed a better idea.

I don't think it would have any negative affect on getting new members. If anything, it would give them an incentive to stick around just so that they can try out the team games after completing 5 games.

And It would definetly help fix some of the scoreboard bias. Lets make it happen!

all hail the mighty lack....

I don't think we'll loose anything.. if there would be someone that joines CC just to play teamgames they should be ready to play a couple of singles first, and as you said, over 70% of the deadbeats are new players...
I never join as 3rd player in a double, and I never join a double where I see that my team mate has the ?-mark I have been in too many bad teams...

I don't play CC to get a good rank, I play to have fun. so the point loss doesn't bother me much but when my teammates doesn't play it ruins all the fun.
I'm looking forward to this update.

how would you feel if you joined this site, and then you werent allowed to join games, just because you were new. I think this would make me dislike this site and want to leave if i wasnt allowed to join some games

I think just a minimum of 1 completed game would be plenty enough to keep deadbeats in team games to a minimum. Or even 3 completed turns in any other single game would be enough (if that is even possible to check)

I wouldn't mind...
first of all it is just the teamgames they shouldn't be allowed to join.
and just put a line where you register where it tells the new member that he has to complete a game before he can play a teamgame.

and maybe the option of creating a teamgame still should be allowed? then new players can start with a teamgame if that is the only thing they want to play.

I don't understand the negative about this?
is teamgames the only type of game that is worth anything to you guys?
there is still alot of single games out there that people can join.

don't think of it as a punishment, think of it as a training period...
IRL would you take a soldier that just got his rifle with you into battle? NO, you would want him to get some training first or he might get you and your whole team killed.

I am 100% in favor of this idea. Asking someone to complete one game before they join a team game couldn't be more reasonable.

As I'm sure Lack is already painfully aware, retention - especially of already paying members - is an issue which cannot be ignored. I, for one, am becoming less and less excited about continuing to play because of the many issues with deadbeats or people who simply miss an excessive number of turns. This change would go a long way toward encouraging me to stick around.

And, I agree with Hoff:
i think its a great idea. It would be more incentive for them to stick around. They have play so many singles games, and then they will get a reward of a doubles game.

well you have to give him some creds when he listens to the great ideas...

and even if the posters make the suggestions, lack is the one making all this possible for us.
