Because other people suck.

the scary is that in all likelyhood, the vast majority of us are all idiots. How do you think those other guys feel?

Actually, sometimes there is little more refreshing than going to a place full of idiots. It gives you some satisfaction of a sort.

No, karma is you will get what comes in a future life. I am talking reality, now.

Walk around smiling at everyone, being polite no matter what, for a day. (not saying you don't already) See how they respond.

Next walk around frowing, being grumpy and see how everyone responds.

More often than not, the way people respond to us IS how we deal with them. So, if everyone "else" is acting like a jerk... chances are the real problem is a bit closer to home.

You are right in essence Player, but some people really are jerks, stupid, whatever. Whether it's just that they're unpleasant or whether they won't get off their arse and do their job. Sometimes we happen across a whole bunch of 'em in a row (especially if we're on the phone to Verizon trying to get the service we're bloody well paying for, mutter, fume...sorry, flashback there), and then it seems the world is entirely populated by aggressive incompetent ingrates.

It isn't folks. There are plenty of pleasant, bright, efficient people around.

hmm.. you mean I'm not the only one to dislike Verizon

Anyway, yes, absolutely, some people are jerks. However, when people start saying everyone else is a jerk (or idiot or ...), chances are they themselves are a big part of the problem .

Also, we always have control over our reactions. There is a Mennonite saying "to react is to allow someone else to tell me how to act". I certainly need to heed that myself on occasion!

I encountered an old story (possibly while reading about Zen Buddhism, which would mean I saw it quite a whie ago) - the guards on a city gate ask everyone who wants to enter what their last city was like. If they rant about cheats, fools, rudeness, etc, the guards say "Yes, this place stinks too. It's exactly the smae. I should move onto the next city, anywhere has to be better than lthis dump." But if the answer is that there were a lot of good people in the last city, honest , polite, etc. then the guards say "come right in, you should fit in well. That's just what it's like here."

It is so warm and fuzzy in here. You all are going to come back as tribbles.

Of course, I would add the supplementary question, "Do you work for Verizon?" A "Yes" would get them booted straight out.
