All that seems to matter to most clans is how they are perceived. So I will keep an updated list of clan rankings based on the perception of each clan as perceived by all clan leaders. This list will be updated every 3-4 months.

I will ask for the participation of all clan leaders to send me in their votes on clan rankings. I hope that each leader will take input from their clan members so the list will collectively reflect how your clan thinks the rankings are. Participation of each clan leader is optional, I can not force anyone to send me votes. However, regardless of whether a clan leader decides to vote or not, his clan will still be voted on. All active clans will be ranked in the votes so we get an idea of how every clan is perceived to be ranked in comparison to other clans.

I will send out a PM to all clan leaders listing all active clans and ask for their votes. I will ask that each clan does not place their own clan in the rankings. I will also include several links where you can find data/results of all of the clans to better pick your votes. In the PM I will copy Incandenza from THOTA, and Chariot of Fire from TOFU. I will then BCC every clan leader so they can reply to all and send their votes to the 3 of us. The 3 of us will check all votes for integrity and make sure no one set of votes is trying to intentionally skew the results of the rankings. If we suspect this then we will ask the person who made the votes for some clarification on their reasoning and we will determine whether or not we think that is their intention.

Integrity and honesty are the most important parts of a human poll. I hope that every clan leader can cast a vote that is what they truly believe the clans to be ranked and not what seems to be most beneficial to themselves/their clan.

Once all votes are collected, I will compile them and average out each clans ranking. I will then rank the clans in order of lowest average to highest. I will also show the averages and standard deviation for each clan so you have a better idea of where they were thought to be and how much of a range most people had on that ranking.

I will hopefully get a PM out very soon and start collecting votes and hope to have a ranking up fairly soon on the first post!

This list should not be given consideration as it was a seedings exercise for a tournament with certain criteria, e.g. player quota, etc. Because of this I ranked according to perceived strength in this tournament alone, giving more weight to clans with greater depth (as a minimum of nine players were required to fill the games). I did a similar thing for the CLA forecast where there were no player restrictions and the majority of games were doubs, therefore detracting from the advantage that strong-in-depth clans had and levelling the playing field for those who had maybe two or three exceptional players who could fill most of the slots.

So to do this exercise properly there's not only a bit of research that's needed, but there are also things that need to be factored in.

When I (eventually) start my list I'll adopt a process, as there has to be a starting point and then a series of variables.

- list all the clans based on historical performance (starting point)
- adjust according to acquisition/retirement of key members
- adjust according to strength in depth of their current members
- adjust according to future predictions (end point)

The last point is somewhat contrary to a ladder that ranks according to achievements, as it's based on perceived performance (rather like seedings in a tournament). It does however comply with the statement made in Chuck's PM "If each clan were to play each other today then I want the rankings to show who you think would come out on top over whom" therefore this new ranking system has to cater to both past, present and future - much like a share price index.

If everyone does it fairly and diligently then I'm sure with such a large cross-section of participating clans that the end result will be an accurate reflection of what we each expect. People just have to adopt an efficient system when they make their estimations.

I actually enjoyed putting my list together.

Granted, at the bottom of the 36-team list it got difficult... but using the completed tournaments and other links definitely helped. Very interested to see the final result and how closely my opinions matched others.
