Why do people use pictures of other people as their avatars?

I understand landscapes, cartoon characters, and statues.

I don't understand other people... unless that dude who is your avatar is famous... maybe I would understand that...

Saxi's comments were still racist.

LMAO! Ol' Saxi had no idea what Pedronicus said either but I like it when he talks ethnic. It's exotic, very native, especially when you only have Americans to whom to listen to all week. You really feel like you're on safari on Portabello Road or Islington or what not, trudging through the bush and such, sometimes reading these ... why Pedronicus is one of ol' Saxi's FAV posters. Sometimes I just want to cage him up and have him shipped over here to Santa Barbara and just have him talk to me - LOVE IT!
OK Saxi... this is sad in so many ways.

1) Pedro lives in England... I have a hard time imagining a "safari" and "trudging through the bush and such" anywhere in England.

2) You want to "cage him up and have him shipped over here"? OK... let's think about that for a second. Pretty sick and sad in a few ways.

Your whole post sounds quite RACIST to me Saxi.
If that came out wrong I apologize as it was intended as an enthusiastic endorsement, not a diminutive. However, I don't know that it's racist. I don't know what race Pedronicus but odds are 90%+ he's white if he's in the UKGBNI.
Look at his avatar... I'm guessing that's him, no?
Uhhh ...

JB - you really need to lay-off the cartoons and experience the joys of culture and civilization.

1) Cartoons are culture... not what people call "cultured"... but by definition they are part of culture.

2) Why should I know wtf that avatar is a picture of... some dude smoking and playing a guitar... yippee.

Absolutely. One should pay more attention to games than foolishly squandering their time in discussions. Exchanging ideas, debating political and religious issues, swapping stories - why would any sane person choose that over playing a game of Risk?

I for one appreciate your taking the time to unmask the heinous doctor and expose him to all as a nogameplaying wretch.

Some mass-produced studio drivel imagined in a focus group by a gaggle of MBAs is not culture.

If you don't know who one of the greatest Blues guitarists your country has produced is, but can regurgitate lines from The Simpsons on command, that is more of a YP than a MP.

This is an opinion.

# 1 - I think Family Guy IS funny and entertaining... the Simpsons were, but my opinion is they 'jumped the shark' long ago.

# 2 - Definition of the word culture... "The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group."

... by this definition, "mass produced drivel" is in fact culture.

Please stop stating opinions as fact.

One is not a "better person" because they prefer a evening at the Opera over an evening watching the 3rd Season of Family Guy.

Your implication is that because Family Guy is "not cultured" I am somehow "less intelligent" than someone who knows who the f*** Pedro uses for his avatar pic.

It's a poor implication, and unworthy of you... even though you are a proven racist.

So you would steer the cultural level of your children in the direction of "Family Guy" rather than Opera. Mmmkay. That should save you having to come up with any serious funds for college.

I am willing to bet that the majority of this year's entering Freshman class at Harvard have NOT seen a live Opera.

Let me repeat... the majority have NOT seen a live Opera. That would mean that out of 100 Freshman students at Harvard... some number less than 49 have NOT seen a live Opera.

That said... yes... I believe that being culturally 'well rounded' is good. Though you can NOT possibly know everything... it is impossible to be exposed to every facet of modern culture.

Also... yes... the percentage of 1st year Freshman at Harvard who have seen a live Opera is higher than the percentage of 1st year Freshman at Mass Bay Community College who have seen a live Opera.

The simple point being.... you can be very intelligent and still have no interest or exposure to Opera. These are not mutually exclusive.

I believe the pertinent subject matter here dealt with the rigidity of Kingdoctor's penis upon winning a game. You had something to contribute on that?

to have lived a life that's sheltered you from Robert Johnson as well as Richard Wagner is to not really have lived much at all. becoming more cosmopolitan is essential to wanting more out of life and choosing to go down the paths that will take you there. listening to opera will not get you into college, but being intellectually and socially curious enough to check out an opera is a good indication that you'll do well out in the world.

This has nothing to do with the opera. Based on his life story I'd warrant Robert Johnson never attended an opera before his untimely death either.

I think the question is: should grown, adult men be able to hold a conversation in which they are able to make - and understand - cultural references of a higher caliber than what joke about which bodily function XYZ cartoon character on last week's episode of South Park cracked?

Are those who cannot hold such a conversation contributing members of society and helping to progress the human species or are they just worker/breeder automatons?

Agreed. That being said, opera sucks.

I've never seen a live opera and it's not something that interests me. Nevertheless i encouraged my son to check it out for himself and he liked it.

I also watched Beavis and Butthead with him on a fairly regular basis.

bravo! your son is not a better person for liking opera, rather he has bettered himself by discovering that he likes something new.
