I've been busy for quite a while, but I had quite a bit of time today, so I did some annoying tasks to hopefully make people like the map a bit more.

Image

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

1. No more Art.

I felt that (especially with the influx of new blood in the foundry) that the colour issue might become a problem. So, even if you do not like the colours, you cannot complain that you can't tell what the bonuses are because I have included a mini-map ala Widowmakers on Great Lakes and Gimil on Portugal (probably others too).

Also, this helps because I don't have to pick a piece of art to add on the map, which I honestly don't think is needed especially since this is just a very basic, 'pure' map. If someone makes a revolutionary South America map, then some art could be very fitting.

The difficulties arising from adding art are finding something that looks good, something that is free for use, and something that blends well with everything else. Too difficult for me, especially when I wasn't big on the idea anyway.

2. Borders

I was fine with the old ones. Some people weren't here are some thinner ones. Map Makers know how annoying redoing borders can be. I'm down to adjust these slighty (fix any minor errors), but I don't want to do them all over again, so it's probably going to be these or the old ones.

You'll notice that I made the continent to continent borders thicker. This is, again, to help distinguish where the bonus areas are.

Questions/Future

1. Gameplay

a. I think a bridge from Sao Paulo to Mato Grosso is a good idea. Helps add more flow to that area.

So, those of you out there that want your voice heard on gameplay. You high score people. Give your thoughts on this and other gameplay issues on the map.

b. Marv mentioned a bridge from Xingu to Amapa instead of Japura to Roraima. Thoughts?

I think it's a good idea. It makes getting to the north from the east a bit easier.

Comments. Suggestions. Complaints.

Don't be afraid.

OH MY! THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!

I really like this better than the old one. The only thing is the borders in the south are hard to see. I would lighten the dark brown and dark green and a little.

Other than that, for now, that is it.

Clear Text - CHECK
Clear Bonus - CHECK
Nice Style - CHECK
Borders - Almost

Love IT!

I think the borders look fine, personally. I actually think everything is really well done, great work here.

My only issue was the colors on the legend. But this was remedied a la mini-map. Excellent choice.

Other than that, I'd say this is just aboot ready for final forge in my opinion.

After the southern borders are redone as WM suggested I would consider this for Forging.

with regard to the Xingu to Guyanan Highlands connection, we could have that connection from Xingu to Amapa and then make Ceara connect to Amapa as well (instead of Suriname)

Anyone have thoughts on a bridge on that river in the middle of Brazilian Highlands?

Sounds good to me. :)

I'm noticing already I have a bit of a weakness for balance/game play sometimes that cairnswk was better at, hopefully my eyes will get more accustomed to looking for that. I feel like I should have noticed to make that suggestion. :(

when you're looking at probably 20 maps a day, you'll never catch everything.

my focus is on this map, so I'll notice more stuff (and also be a lot more blinded to things since I know so much about it)

Who were the 'high score' people again? I want some gameplay feedback from there folk.

opening should be on lima instead of ecuador. looks well balanced for all styles to me atm, will have a closer inspection later.

on closer inspection i think the map would benefit from having both those bridges in (the hypothetical and the actual)

Another thing I would like to suggest... Move the names over Atlantic to a position where they are more connected to the land mass, like Pernambuco (when its possible, of course). There is no reason for having names like Bahia over the ocean.

Did you forget the little renames list I sent to you, ed? Its like 2-3 territories, if I remember well.

I did forget.

do you know them off hand?

edit: I changed Atacama to Cusco, but Rio Negro won't fit well where Japura is.

I have the names in the atlantic because all of them are that way. makes it more uniform. I'll move them all closer though.

Made a few of the changes discussed here

1. Darkness of Patagonia and Gran Chaco cut down
2. Bridge from Xingu to Amapa and Matto Grosso to Sao Paulo
3. Water path now connects to Amapa instead of Suriname
4. I put out a different legend font because Marv suggested it. Let us know what you think. (I know we voted on this already, but just humour us please)

I'm done with small map now too and the XML. I'll post these once I get some feedback on the legend. Whether people like the change or if I should go back the the previous legend font.

So, I just fixed all the changes in the XML, but I'm getting a syntax error I didn't get before.

Test results:

line 1: <map> - Did not expect text in element map content

Summary: 1 errors and 0 warnings detected in SouthAmerica.xml.txt

I'm also getting this on my old Caribbean Islands XML too.

But, my own personal checks did not come up with any problems.

here is the XML if you want to peek.(sorry about long text)

Code: Select all

The problem is the dashes -> did you save this using IE?

You need to open this in notepad - and get rid of those dashes...

no I did it in notepad

dashes were there from my Caribbean Islands xml. this problem never occurred with the old tester.

Anyway, that was the problem. Thanks!

I had one mistake in there Amapa didn't have Ceara as a border. Post edited above.

New tester is much more strict!!! DiM was having this problem too...

However I assume that Lack would've had to strip out those dashes in old XML's if they were there regardless of what the XML tester said!!

I actually like the old text better (page 14)

I figured I might as well post the small and large since I have them both. I'll wait to see more people comment on the legend font (also to see what Marv thinks).

Very good, I liked the legend a lot :)

The single thing I still dislike is the position of some names. I would move Loreto to the west, and Guyana, Suriname and Maranhão a bit to southeast. I would make the names touch the land, also, when possible. And I still think its strange names like Bahia and Minas Gerais over ocean instead over land.

Hmmm, maybe reduce Pampas brightness too...

But other than that, I think its done :)
