Why does the name apply to people with seemingly orange hair? Am I missing something major about how scientists name the pigment in our hair?

The pigment is red. You see paler shades because of translucency.

An Australian breed of cattle/sheep dog is called the blue heeler, except they are not blue in colour, closer to red. A person with red hair is often called bluey...... If you say you got in a blue, means you got in a fight. So blue is associated with both red hair/fur and fighting. Temper temper.
