So there I was, just past the half-way point in a Scrabble game with my dad and step-mom, with a good 16 point lead at the end of the round. I had just scored a nice 30 pointer (thank God "Oy" was in the Official Scrabble Dictionary) and though I was wearing a poker face, I was masturbating inside my head.

Then...it hit me:

I HAD 7 GOD DAMNED VOWELS IN MY HAND. 2 As, 4 Is and a U. But, since I had a nice lead, I could trade them in, right?

f*ck NO.

I traded in all but one of each vowel...and guess what I got back. 2 As, an I and a fucking Q. A FUCKING Q.

So I'm forced to trade in again, because I couldn't get more than like 5 points and could only use one of my letters anyway. So, I get pretty good letters...minus a FUCKING Z. A FUCKING Z AND A FUCKING Q.

FUCKING SCRABBLE!!!!!!

Its in Merriam Webster dictionary, but is dissallowed in many Scrabble versions. If anyone asks, its one spelling of the word for the "energy force" referred to in some martial arts, some eastern religions, etc. (don't quote me, look it up, but that is the general concept).
Welsh has provided us with a few nice "no vowels" options, too.

Works great in Words with Friends

I lose scrabble against CD nearly 75% of the time. Only luck and strategic use of my more limited vocabulary allows me to sneak the occasional win.

I lose boggle against her 100% of the time. I think she has a better chance of beating me in a speed freestyle game on World. Its very humbling.

"q" and "z" are awesome letters, total game breakers if you're in the right position, i had an "x" once, placed it on a triple letter square intersecting an "a" and an "i", 50 pts for 1 letter (ax and xi)

also I got a 56 pt recently with quilts by abusing the triple word score

anyone else find the game is not as much about coming up with good words but rather figuring out the best way to abuse/block the bonuses

How about "MADE," that should work.

please, quiz on the triple word score, zax, better yet, equinox on triple word (with the using all your letters bonus).

But no, I am not bragging. I usually lose against good players.

Part of the strategy of scrabble is to keep a healthy rack. You should put down words to get rid of tricky letters as much as going for points.

Qi IS NOT allowed in our version (the third).


And yea, I've learned that the two most important things are:

1. Knowing how and when to use the bonuses
2. Knowing those cheesy words

Words like oy, ai, id, do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do and the sharps/flats of those and all of the spellings of the letters of the alphabet. THAT is the key to winning.

That can often lead to success in a great many games....some better than others.

My greatest scrabble triumph was playing the word "zouave" on a triple-word while completing two other words too. Dtails escape me, it was a long while ago.

And the welsh word "Cwm" fora corrie is in most dictionaries.
