The year is 58 BC. Julius Caesar is proconsul of both Gallia Cisalpina and Gallia Narbonensis. For years have the Romans been good partners with the Gauls. Some of them are even under protectorate of the Roman empire, like for example the Aedui.

All of a sudden the Arverni, Sequani and the Suebi conspire to attack the Aedui. The Romans don't intervene and thereby lose an ally. In the aftermath of this conspiration, the Sequani reward the Suebi for helping them by giving them a piece of territory in Gaul. This germanic tribe moves into Gaul with a strong army.

The Romans had just having defeated the Helvetii in the Battles of Bibracte & Arar, whom had dared to attack another ally of the Romans, the Alobroges. With the Helvetii gone, Caesar now turns his attention to the Suebi. He doesn't like the presence of their large army in Gaul. Together with the Sequani, who by now regretted giving land to the barbaric Suebi, Caesar attacks the Suebi to drive the back out. He defeats them in the Battle of Vosges.

Right after this once again the same thing happens. This time it are the Belgae tribes who attacked an ally of Rome, so Caesar launches a campaign against them. At Sabis River Caesar gets surprised by an attack of Nervii, Atrebates and Viromandui. He himself almost gets caught. But just in time reinforcements arrives and he is able to turn the battle to victory. Though even wit hthe Atrebates in Viromandui on the run and the Nervii far outnumbered, the hord of Nervii stood their ground, willing to fight to the death.

Next a series of punitive wars started. The Armorican tribe of Veneti had assembled tribes who wanted the Romans out of Gaul. This was the first time Caesar had to fight a seabattle. He launched his navy to fight in the Bay of Morbihan against the enemy fleet and triumphs. A little later Suebi come raiding from north of the Rhine and Caesar has to push 'm back at the battle of Treveri. After having punished these tribes, Caesar does the same yet again, but this time crosses the channel to Britain. He almost loses this battle because of the weather which wrecked his ships and because of the large numbers of chariots the Brittons used to confuse the Roman ranks.

At this moment Caesar has taken all of Gaul even if it were with some help of allied gaelic tribes. There are however still rebels. It is to irradicate these threats that the Roman legions once again set out to war. At the battle of Atuatuca, the Belgae tribe of the Eburones under the command of Ambiorix almost wipes out an entire garrison of Roman troops, if it were not for Caesar arriving just in time to save the day. Following this battle Caesar exterminates all of the Eburones tribe and all it's allies. But knowing how much trouble he's had with the Belgae, both with the Eburones and the Nervii, he writes "Of all the Gauls the Belgae are the bravest".

Lastly he starts his last campaign against the even bigger rebellion under the leadership of the Arverni chief Vercingetorix, whom had succesfully united many gaelic tribes under his command. This led to several great battles at Lutetia & Avaricum. In Gergovia most of the troops of Vercingetorix get defeated and he flees to Alesia, where he makes his last stand but in the end loses and gets captured by the Romans.
The strategy of the player will severly differ according to what capital you start with and what bonuses you are closest to. However I think the following steps will be followed:
 • First people will try and grow their army by getting the Auxiliairy troops option.
 • Then they will expand outwards from their capital. Some people will fight in Gaul, others will fight over the auxiliairies.
 • In the end some people will grow faster than others and will start taking away other peoples bonuses by attacking their auxiliairies. But the strongest player has to watch out cuz he is vulnerable in the auxiliairies
 • Finally the strongest player after having eliminated a couple of players, will hold victory conditions and win.
To do-list:
 • check if everything is readable on small map scale

No, the " Gaul " we're seen as barbarians, an enemy of rome, the people of rome and rome itself was much more civilized.
The Gaul we're well know for there metalworking and extensive trade.

it's called "Conquer Gaul", they are the ones who conquered it :P

Also the romans used to hate the gaelic folk. At the foundation of Rome, they used to come down from the north and raid Rome.

Have you never seen asterix comic books/ films?? Maybe it was ironical i don t know.

Anyway, personally wow i think it s a good idea but i m not a great fan of the graphics so far, i think there are too many details in the background and it s difficult to read.

Are all those village names true? Wasn t paris lutecia?

Gaul is a collection name of many independent tribes. Generally it is accepted that it existed out of different parts:
 • blue: Belgica
 • pink and green: Lugdunensis
 • orange: Helvetica
 • cyan: Aquitania
 • yellow: Narbonensis
 • Purple: Cisalpina
==> This is old Gaul, Julius Caesar only started invading Gaul once Cisalpina and Narbonensis were already part of the roman empire.

the gauls also used to fight the germanic tribes often(not sure about the hispanic tribes)
The Helvetica tribe for example was once invaded from the north and driven out of it's lands. They went on a walk-about in search for a new land until Julius Ceasar drove 'm back to their homeland.

so do we play the Romans and try to Conquer Gaul before the other Romans do or is this a standard map like France where we are distributed randomly within the region ?

Initially I didn't plan on integrating Rome into it, but I needed an extra starting point.
As for the starting positions, everybody starts with a capital and for the rest everybody will get randomly distributed territories all over the map. Though tech, cattle, battlesites and mines will start neutral for sure. Other territories I will still have to analyze how to equilibrate starting positions.

some adjustments I might make:
 • add a foreign invasion system(similar to Conquer Rome)
 • Remove Rome as starting position and make one in Pictones(northern Aquitania)
 • shorten names so they fit in the boxes
 • Re-draw territory borderlines to make 'm more pretty
 • shuffle around with the cattle and mines
 • maybe adjust some tech-options

All of the names are real, though some might be a little off position. Also Lutetia is a city not a tribe(collection of towns= mini nation).
The same goes for example for Massilia(Marseille).
I'll try to fix background :)

made some changes:
 • I got rid of the snowy tops of the mountains
 • Blurred the background a bit for less detail
 • Shortened some territory names so it's readable
 • moved some items around within territory to make it more orderly
 • added couple of cattle and mines to even up balance a bit
 • redrew some border lines, so they look a bit less messy(though still not sure how to draw decent lines in GIMP)
 • made coastlines and riverbeds a bit darker
 • changed some bonuses

Remark: I'll probably change the agriculture bonus as it is sometimes too unclear what territory borders 2 rivers

the first thing that comes to mind looking at your map is this old EvilDIMwit map project.
It was a great idea, maybe you can find something you can give you some additional inspiration viewtopic.php?f=242&t=113230

P.s. don't go with both versions, you don't need for now...use the large.

Finally, I'm moving your map into the drafting room considering that it seems to me that it shows all the elements required. ;)

I just read the mapmakers manual, and saw I need to show my to do-list.
my current concerns I'm planning on working on:
 • Some parts of the map are still too bright, need to darken 'm
 • Find a solution for the agriculture tech bonus
 • Find a way to make borderlines blend in better

anybody else got any remarks I should add to my to do-list?

Another few changes:
 • Adjusted some colouring
 • added treelines to seperate some areas from attacking each other
 • made the Rau. area pink instead of blue to make it more compatible to bonus areas
 • adjusted some descriptions

also decided to leave the borderlines as is for the moment, as I prefer not drawing fat lines.

to do list: decide what to do with the agricultural bonus and the housing bonus

Made some pretty big changes:
 • made new boxes for better look
 • got rid of Rome and divided Aquitania in 2 parts
 • changed 'tribe tech advances'
 • added tech features to each territory
 • added victory conditions

what do you guys think? This should make the map gameplay a lot more complex I think.

Interesting map... in the South get rid of that 4 way connection.

I also would change out that water. Try something more blue...

The rivers look to large to me. Try to thin them out.

Good luck!
